SYDNEY, Australia, Nov. 10--The rising star of Australian cricket, batsman Michael Clarke, was named Wednesday in the team to open this month's Test series against New Zealand, replacing a luckless Simon Katich, AFP reported.
Darren Lehmann, who was at risk of losing his spot to Clarke, remained in the 12-man squad subject to full recovery from a hamstring injury and spinmeister Shane Warne has also made a comeback from a fractured thumb.
The other player dropped from the team which achieved a historic victory in Australia's Test series against India last month was young spin bowler Nathan Hauritz, who lost his spot to Warne.
Paceman Brett Lee was also retained, but looked likely to again be the 12th man after failing to bowl a single over during the India series.
Clarke's sensational Test debut in India, where he was called in to replace injured captain Ricky Ponting, gave Australian selectors their toughest task in years in deciding the team to play New Zealand.
Clarke, 23, made 151 in his debut innings in Bangalore and topped both the team's batting and bowling averages after taking six wickets for only nine runs in the fourth Test in Bombay.
Katich, 29, was also on fire with the third highest batting average in India, but he was finally dropped in favor of the more experienced Lehmann, 34. Katich could be recalled however if Lehmann fails to recover fully from the hamstring tear he suffered in the fourth India Test. Lehmann has hit five centuries in his last 14 Tests.
Hohns said Clarke had confirmed his position as the hope for Australian cricket's future with his achievements in India.

LONDON, Nov. 10--Italian teen Arturo Lupoli scored two goals to lead Arsenal past Everton 3-1 Tuesday, putting the Gunners in the fifth round of the English League Cup, AP reported.
Lupoli, 17, and Arsenal's other young players gave the Gunners only their second victory in the last seven games. The Gunners dropped out of first place in the Premier League over the weekend, falling behind Chelsea.
In other League Cup games Tuesday, Tottenham beat Burnley 3-0, Portsmouth defeated Cardiff 2-0, and Watford topped Southampton 5-2.
Thomas Gravesen gave Everton a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute at Highbury. But the lead didn't last long, with 18-year-old Dutchman Quincy Owusu-Abeyie tying it for Arsenal in the 25th. Lupoli scored in the 52nd and again in the 85th.
Owusu-Abeyie, who came on as an early substitute, scored on a low shot behind former Arsenal 'keeper Richard Wright. Lupoli scored his first goal after chipping a ball home off a clever pass from Dutchman Robin van Persie. His second came off a cross from Owusu-Abeyie.
In Tottenham's 3-0 win, Robbie Keane scored two, and Jermain Defoe added the other.
Aiyegbeni Yakubu scored two as Portsmouth, another Premier League team, advanced to the fifth round.
Southampton was the only Premier League loser. James Chambers scored two goals for Watford, with others from Bruce Dyer, Hiedar Helguson and Hameur Bouazza. Dexter Blackstock and Brett Ormerod scored for the Saints.

F1 Teams Save British, French Races
LONDON, Nov. 10--The British and French Grand Prix look to have been saved after every Formula One team apart from Ferrari agreed on Tuesday to cut testing by 50 percent according to Autosport magazine's website, AFP reported.
The teams agreed to bear the cost of two extra races in a collective agreement while Ferrari, who oppose a cut in testing, were absent from the meeting.
"We've not got a contract with Silverstone yet, but I would be shattered and disappointed if we didn't get a deal," said Formula One supremo Berni Ecclestone, who met with the teams to hammer out the details.
McLaren chief Ron Dennis certainly thought that the deal meant both the races could go ahead.
"We believe agreement was reached that removes any obvious obstacle for the British and French GPs to take place," he said.
The teams shell out three million pounds for each race but decided they could put up with 19 races next season and felt it was better to cut expenses by reducing testing.
Ecclestone was more upbeat about Ferrari joining the rest of their rivals in agreeing to the compromise.
"It's wrong to say that Ferrari have been excluded," said Ecclestone. "I think they will come along. It's positive news for a change."
The British Grand Prix had been in danger because of a financial dispute between silverstone's owners, the British Racing Drivers' Club, and Ecclestone, who has had his run-ins with them in the past.
The two parties would still have to agree a deal for the race to regain its place on the calendar for 2005.
"The BRDC has not yet been officially informed of any proposal by FOM formula One Management," the BRDC said in a statement.
"But if there is a new proposal to safeguard the British Grand Prix in 2005 which makes financial sense for the sport, the industry, the club and especially the local economy, it will be seriously considered by the board."

Jonassen, Bao Advance
BEIJING, Nov. 10--Danish veteran shuttler Kenneth Jonassen and local hopeful Bao Chunlai had an easy ride through the first round of the 250,000 dollar China Open badminton championships in Guangzhou Tuesday, AFP reported.
The mixed doubles event was thrown wide open when world No. 1 mixed pair Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms withdrew due to injury.
Fifth-seeded Bao beat Hong Kong's Yohan Hadikusumo Wiratama 15-6, 13-15, 15-3, blaming a knee injury for his second set loss.
Jonassen beat Malaysia's Kuan Beng-Hong 15-3, 15-9 in 40 minutes. The European runner-up will now face China's Zhu Weilun.
In the men's singles, China's Hu Yun beat Jonassen's teammate Anders Boesen 8-15, 15-7, 15-3.
Among other wins for the home players, 19-year-old Lu Yi beat the Netherlands Dicky Palyama and Wu Yunyong triumphed over Malaysia Open champion Lee Chong Wei.
World No.1 Lin Dan, world champion Xia Xuanze and Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat enjoyed first-round byes.
It was a disappointing day for England, with the withdrawal of Emms and Robertson and elimination of their two other seeded mixed pairs.
Natalie Munt and Robert Blair lost to Indonesia's Tetty Yunita and Anggun Nugroho in straight sets while Donna Kellogg and Anthony Clark lost to Wong Pei-Tty and Koo Kien-Keat of Malaysia 9-14, 15-13 and 15-3.

BERLIN, Nov. 10--Holders Werder Bremen needed extra-time to reach the quarterfinals of the German Cup with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over second division Eintracht Trier on Tuesday, AFP said.
Dane Daniel Jensen put Bremen ahead in the fifth minute but Trier pegged Werder back through Antun Labak on 57 minutes and the game went into extra-time.
Jensen added his second in the 105th minute before substitute Ivan Klasnic added a third in the dying seconds.
While Bremen will be glad to progress, their manager Thomas Schaaf will be frustrated at playing another 30 minutes with his fatigued side already completing their seventh game in 21 days.
Borussia Dortmund were left rueing a late penalty miss from Brazilian Ewerthon as they exited the German cup with a 1-0 reverse at Hannover.
Silvio Schroeter struck on 59th minutes to put Hannover in front but they then missed an 81st minute penalty through Spaniard Thomas Christiansen.
In a hectic period, Dortmund won a penalty two minutes later but Ewerthon arrowed his spot-kick wide.
Dortmund, who have not won the competition since 1989, now have no chance of silverware this season and must also sweat on Czech international Tomas Rosicky who suffered a recurrence of his back problem. Arminia Bielefeld joined Hannover in the last eight following a 4-0 thrashing of Karlsruhe.
Elsewhere Bayern Munich Amateure, the second team of the German titans, continue to make headway in the competition with a 3-2 victory over Eintracht Braunschweig.
Peruvian Paulo Guerrero, 20, built on his first Bundesliga goal for the Bayern first team over the weekend netting a brace (53, 58) to help sink Braunschweig.
On Wednesday, Bayern Munich host VfB Stuttgart in the tie of the round that is spiced up by the presence of manager Felix Magath. Magath left Stuttgart for Bayern at the end of last season and faces his former club for the first time.

Terry Will Stay in Chelsea
LONDON, Nov. 10--Chelsea captain John Terry signed a new contract Tuesday that will keep him at the Premiership high-flyers until 2009, AFP reported.
The England defender's previous contract with the London club was only signed in July 2003.
But the 23-year-old, a one-club man having been a trainee at Stamford Bridge, told Chelsea's official website, www.chelseafc.com: "It was a mutual decision.
"I only signed last year but I had a chat with Peter Kenyon at the end of last season and people who have been in since. It has been ongoing but finally it's all done and all sorted and I'm very happy."

Tarver, Johnson Surrender Boxing Crowns
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 10--Jamaica's Glen Johnson and American southpaw Antonio Tarver, who both knocked out Roy Jones, have given up their world titles in order to fight each other in a light heavyweight showdown, AFP said.
Promoters for the December 18 fight here at Staples Center said Tuesday that Tarver would relinquish his World Boxing Council crown and Johnson would surrender his International Boxing Federation title.
Tarver, 22-2 with 18 knockouts, and Johnson, 41-9 with two draws and 28 knockouts, were expected to be unifying their crowns when they agreed last "The big boxing public recognizes Antonio Tarver for his win over Roy Jones. They definitely recognize me, too, for my win over Roy Jones," Johnson said.
"People have an opinion as to who is the best fighter between us two. So that's why he and I wanted to get it settled."
Promoters said both fighters asked their sanctioning bodies to allow them to fight each other rather than mandatory top challengers but were denied and in turn handed back their crowns, what they hope will be a more profitable option.
"It is with great regret that I must inform you that I have concluded that the best route for me and my family is to fight Glen Johnson on December 18," Tarver wrote to the WBC, according to his promoters, Star Boxing.
The fight was a natural after Tarver battered Jones in May and Johnson stunned Jones in September. And Tarver has been stung in past years by champions who ignored him in favor of better paydays.
