EAST RUTHERFORD,
USA, July 22--The United States survived a scare from Honduras by scoring two late goals and will now face Panama in the Sunday's final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup football tournament, AFP reported.
In their third-ever Gold Cup meeting against Honduras, the Americans rallied with a pair of goals in the final four minutes to register a dramatic 2-1 win on Thursday at Giants Stadium.
Oguchi Onyewu's winning header in the dying seconds came just minutes after John O'Brien got the favored Americans on the board for the first time. The US is ranked sixth in the world.
Ivan Guerrero opened the scoring for Honduras in the 31stminute.
In the other semifinal, Ricardo Phillips scored twice and Jorge Luis Dely Valdes added a single as Panama beat Colombia 3-2.
Jairo Leonardo Patino scored both goals for Colombia.
Phillips opened the scoring 12 minutes into the match for Panama who led 2-0 at the half.
He tallied his second goal at the 73rd minute to make it 3-1.

West Indies Call Up Powell for One-Dayers
KANDY, Sri Lanka, July 22--West Indies have called up middle order batsman Ricardo Powell for the triangular one-day series in Sri Lanka starting at the end of the month, a media release confirmed on Friday, Reuters reported.
The 26-year-old batsman, famed for his powerful strokeplay, will be added to the current 14-man squad that is playing a two-match test series against Sri Lanka.
The addition of just one name to the squad dashed hopes that some of the 10 leading players who refused to sign tour contracts for the tests due to a sponsorship dispute may reach an agreement with the cricket board in time for the tri-series.
The tri-series, which also includes India as well as hosts Sri Lanka, starts in Dambulla on July 30.
Powell will add valuable experience to the squad having played 105 one day internationals, scoring 2,070 runs at an average of 25.87 during his career.

TORONTO, July 22--Top-seeded American Andy Roddick cruised into the quarterfinals at the RCA Championships with a routine 6-2 6-2 win over Israel's Noam Okun in Indianapolis on Thursday, Reuters reported.
Roddick made quick work of Okun to advance to the final eight along with second-seeded Nicolas Kiefer of Germany, who overwhelmed Kevin Kim of the US 6-1 6-3.
The two-time defending champion at this event, Roddick will play compatriot Robby Ginepri in quarterfinals.
Also advancing was fourth-seeded American Taylor Dent, who defeated German Bjorn Phau 6-2 6-2 at the Indianapolis Tennis Center earlier in the day.
In other third-round action, seventh seeded Greg Rudeski of Great Britain continued his domination of Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark, beating the 12th seed 7-6 6-2.
Rudeski, who won this event in 2002, has beaten Carlsen on all five occasions they have met since the first in 1995.
However, Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand was an upset loser, the ninth seed swept away by Ginepri 6-0 6-4 in just 46 minutes.
"I felt good before, but my energy just drained away," said Paradorn, who has slipped from a high ranking of ninth in the world to 43rd.
"My battery just emptied."
In other third round matches, American Paul Goldstein was a 6-3 6-2 winner over Ecuador's Giovanni Lapentti and Mardy Fish, seeded 16th as a wild-card entry, retired because of a wrist injury after taking a 2-1 lead in the first set of his match Switzerland's George Bastl.
Tenth seeded Slovakian Karol Beck also advanced with a 6-2 6-4 victory over Rajeev Ram of the United States.

Hiddink Named Australia Coach
SYDNEY, Australia, July 22--PSV Eindhoven coach Guus Hiddink was named as Australia's new national coach on Friday, replacing Frank Farina who left the job last month.
Hiddink's appointment came as no surprise after he told reporters in South Korea on Wednesday that he would take over as Australia coach to help them qualify for the 2006 World Cup finals, Reuters reported.
"The Hiddink appointment is the best possible response to our immediate need which is to give Australia every chance of success in the World Cup playoffs and, hopefully, in the finals next year," Football Federation Australia (FFA) chairman Frank Lowy said in a statement.
"He has had a distinguished career and his record speaks for itself. We could not have hoped for a more qualified, internationally-recognized coach to lead us on the road to Germany."
Hiddink will take control of the Socceroos immediately but also continue to work with Dutch champions PSV.
His first opportunity to work with the Australian side will be next month when the team assembles for a training camp in the Netherlands.
Australia cancelled a friendly with Colombia in London next month after the coach asked for the training camp instead.
FFA said the 58-year-old would remain with the Australian side until after the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany, should they qualify.
Hiddink became the most successful coach in the Dutch first division earlier this year when PSV won the league, giving him his fifth title. He also guided the side to the Dutch Cup and reached the semifinals of the Champions League.
Hiddink initially won four Dutch titles and the European Cup with PSV before he went on to guide the Netherlands (1998) and South Korea (2002) to the semifinals of the World Cup.
He also managed Real Madrid after leaving the Dutch job.
Australia's next matches are the home-and-away 2006 World Cup qualifiers against the Solomon Islands in September, the winners going on to play the fifth-placed South American team over two legs in November for a place in Germany.

Real Madrid Agree to Sign Robinho
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, July 22--Real Madrid have agreed to sign Santos striker Robinho for $30 million, the Spanish club said on their website on Thursday.
The nine-times European champions said they paid 60 percent of the $50 million buy-out clause stipulated in the player's contract in order to buy Santos's share of his rights.
His agent Wagner Ribeiro said Robinho had agreed to forgo the 40 percent to which he was entitled, which accounts for the shortfall of $20 million.
"Robinho is just waiting for a transfer certificate to travel. He waived the 40 percent to which he was entitled to be able to fulfil his dream of playing for Real Madrid," Ribeiro told Reuters.
Real have been chasing the 21-year-old forward since last year but had met with stiff resistance from Santos, who wanted to hold on to the youngster who had played such an instrumental role in their recent success.
Robinho is Real's third new signing of the close season, following Uruguayan duo Pablo Garcia and Carlos Diogo.
His arrival will cast doubts on the future of England striker Michael Owen, whose place in Real's starting line-up could be in jeopardy.
Real also have Ronaldo and Raul on their books, meaning there will be four strikers battling for places up front.
Robinho is one of the world's most exciting players and was an ever-present in the Brazil team which won the Confederations Cup in Germany last month.
The Santos striker, who burst on to the scene as an 18-year-old when he helped the club to win their first Brazilian championship, has been the subject of speculation over a move to Real for the best part of a year.
Robinho has also been linked with Benfica, PSV Eindhoven, Arsenal and Chelsea.
His trickery, ball skills and physique have often led to comparisons with Pele, who spent most of his career at Santos, although the youngster has yet to be fully tested against the world's top defenders.

Woods Closer to Nicklaus Record

ORLANDO, USA,
July 22-- Tiger Woods surpassed even his own expectations by winning his 10th major title last Sunday at the British Open, the 29-year-old golf star said on his website Thursday, AFP said.
Reigning Masters champion Woods moved nearer to Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 major titles by winning in the Golden Bear's farewell event at St. Andrews, giving him multiple victories in every major.
"Honestly, even in my wildest dreams, I never thought I would win 10 major championships, let alone two career Grand Slams, before the age of 30," Woods wrote on his website. "That makes three I've won wire-to-wire.
"There's so much hard work and luck involved. I feel very fortunate."
Woods could capture his 11th major title next month at the PGA Championship, his last major before turning 30 in December.
"I've often been asked if I can catch Jack's record for major championships and it certainly is possible, but we're a long way from getting to that point," Woods said. "It has taken me a while to get to this point--eight years.
"It's not a short term project. This is a career. Hopefully, I can be better in my 30s than I was in my 20s."
After Woods' devastating performance at St. Andrews, that's a bit of a daunting prospect for rivals. Woods has reworked his swing and proved his critics wrong for doubting him and swing coach Hank Haney.
"Winning the British Open for the second time at St. Andrews the way I did was just a dream come true for me," Woods said.

Third Swimming Gold for Canada
MONTREAL, Canada, July 22--Canada's Alexandre Despatie produced another precision performance to claim his second gold medal in three days at the world swimming championships, winning the men's one-meter springboard on Thursday, Reuters said.
Despatie, triumphant in the three-meter springboard on Tuesday, again thrilled his hometown crowd in Montreal with an acrobatic display which earned a mark of 489.69.
China's Xu Xiang, the defending champion, took silver on 445.68 while team mate Wang Feng, the 2001 winner, grabbed bronze on 445.56.
It was the fourth medal and third gold Canada have scooped from the diving event with a show of strength that has upset the form book in a competition China were expected to dominate.

Ullrich Resilient Despite Criticism
BERLIN, July 22--Lashed by criticism at home for failing to fulfil his annual promise to beat Lance Armstrong, Jan Ullrich has become a love-hate object for millions of Germans taking in the Tour de France in daily television doses, Reuters reported.
Anything less than the yellow jersey is not good enough for the German media and many cycling fans have been mocking Ullrich's remarks after each stage as tired excuses.
"In Germany there's always criticism if you don't win," Ullrich, in fourth place, told Die Welt newspaper this week.
"You're criticized even for second place. It's always exaggerated. If it works out, you're the world's greatest hero and if it doesn't they dump all the blame on my shoulders."
A national idol since becoming the first German to win the Tour in 1997 and triggering a boom in cycling in Germany, Ullrich has since finished second to Armstrong three times. High hopes for an elusive second title this year faded on the first stage when he finished more than a minute behind Armstrong. Critics erupted after he pointed out he had crashed through the window of a car while training the day before.
