Call for Muslim Aid To Palestine

TEHRAN, Feb. 20--Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said on Monday the victory of the resistance movement Hamas in Palestinian parliamentary elections was a sweet divine surprise.
In a meeting with Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal, Ayatollah Khamenei added that the people of Palestine and Palestinian freedom fighters continued their Jihad at a time when it seemed there was no hope.
“We are witnessing the fulfillment of divine promises one after the other. After the liberation of Gaza, Hamas’s victory came to the fore which surprised everyone,“ he said.
The leader emphasized that all these victories are due to the resistance of the Palestinian people.
“The Palestinian nation showed that it is vigilant, political and wise. Palestinians voted for Hamas at a time when they knew that this vote implied continuation of resistance and the fight against the Zionist regime,“ he said.
He noted that the standpoints of Hamas, such as not recognizing the state of Israel, not negotiating with the Zionist regime, the return of Palestinian refugees to their motherland and Beit-ul-Moqaddas being the capital of Palestine, are principled and the only way for achieving success is by continuing on the same path.
Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that Islamic governments and people shoulder a heavy responsibility vis-ˆ-vis the Palestinian dilemma.
“In light of efficient plans, the ground should be paved so that all Muslims can play a role in resolving this sensitive issue. One approach for helping this cause is that every year all Muslims render financial assistance to Palestine. This should be of a voluntary nature and can help establish spiritual bonds between Muslims and the Palestinian cause and will have a great impact on the world,“ he said.
Meshaal, for his part, said the victory of Hamas in the parliamentary elections was the victory of all Muslims.
“It is obvious that Iran also has a share in this victory and we congratulate the Iranian nation for this victory,“ he said.
He noted that Palestinians essentially voted for Islam, resistance and reforms.
Meshaal stressed that Hamas will not succumb to the US and Israeli pressures, and will continue on the same path and pursue the fulfillment of its mottoes.

EU, Iran Keen on Diplomatic Nuclear Solution
BRUSSELS, Belgium, Feb. 20--Iranian and European officials said on Monday they were eager to find a diplomatic solution to resolve the standoff over Iran’s nuclear energy program, which Iran’s foreign minister insisted was not being used to develop weapons.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told reporters that moves by the European Union governments and the United States to take the dispute to the UN Security Council was unjustified and unfair, AP reported.
“Nuclear weapons are not in Iran’s defense doctrine,“ Mottaki told reporters at a news conference held at the Iranian Embassy in Brussels. “We would like to enjoy our right to have nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.“
“In our relations with Europe, we have always been honest and fulfilled our commitments. From the other side, we do not have such an approach,“ he said.
Mottaki, who was accompanied by two nuclear negotiators, was in Brussels for talks with senior European Union officials, including the bloc’s foreign policy chief, Javier Solana. He also met briefly with Belgium’s Foreign Minister Karel De Gucht.
“There remains a strong wish for a diplomatic solution. We have no wish to isolate Iran; we hope Iran will not choose to isolate itself,“ said European Commission Spokeswoman Emma Udwin.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Mottaki called for an end to the violent protests over the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) cartoons.
“We should try to cool down the situation. We do not support any violence,“ he said.
The Iranian minister added that freedom of expression must be exercised with sensitivity and with respect for others’ values and beliefs.
Mottaki called on EU governments and media outlets “to take initiatives“ preventing such cartoons from being published again to avoid further protests. The cartoons first appeared in a Danish newspaper in September, and have since been published in media worldwide, including many countries in Europe.

Gov’t Against Price Rise
TEHRAN, Feb. 20--President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Monday the government is against increasing the prices of gasoline and consumer goods to avert associated instability and psychological insecurity.
Speaking at a gathering of representatives of nationwide unions and guilds, the president said that the government’s economic plans aim to limit investment by state companies and to distribute banking facilities properly, IRNA reported.
According to a report released by the Presidential Office’s Media Department, Ahmadinejad underlined that given the significance of economic security and stability, the government is making efforts to implement long-term economic plans without any worries.

2006-7 Budget Realistic
TEHRAN, Feb. 20--Government Spokesman Gholamhossein Elham here Monday defended the 2006-7 budget bill and said it is realistic.
Addressing a press conference, Elham emphasized that the budget bill has focused on developmental projects and generation of new job opportunities, rejecting the idea that it is inflationary, , IRNA reported.
He also said that the 2006-7 budget’s reliance on oil revenues has declined by 2 percent compared with the current year’s budget.
Comparing the annual budget for 2006-7 with the previous year’s, Elham said, “The 2005-6 budget had to be complemented with two amendments, which in itself reveals that the projected figures had not been determined on the basis of expert views.“
The spokesman noted that the 2006-7 budget marks a 21-percent growth compared to that of 2005-6.
He added that according to the Management and Planning Organization (MPO), the inflation rate will hit 13.5 percent during 2006-7, which is half a percent lower than this year’s corresponding figure.
Elham said Iran’s support for the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas is legal, spiritual and political.
“Iran’s support for Palestinian freedom fighters is acceptable to human conscience and it is a global and Islamic drive for defending the rights of the people who have been deprived of their rights,“ he said.
Asked to comment on the remarks of an MP that the cabinet meetings in various provinces are an inexpert, illegal and propagandist move, Elham said, “I have followed this issue closely to find out where the line of reasoning originates from. I believe this kind of comment is overridden by emotion.“

Bin Laden Vows Fresh Attacks in US
CAIRO, Egypt, Feb. 20--Osama bin Laden promised never to be captured alive and declared the US had resorted to the same ’barbaric’ tactics used by the ousted Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, according to an audiotape purportedly by the Al-Qaida leader that was posted Monday on a militant website.
The tape appeared to be a complete version of one that was first broadcast Jan. 19 on Al-Jazeera, the pan-Arab satellite channel, in which bin Laden offered the United States a long-term truce but also said his Al-Qaida terror network would soon launch a fresh attack on American soil, AP reported.
“I have sworn to only live free. Even if I find bitter the taste of death, I don’t want to die humiliated or deceived,“ bin Laden said.
In drawing the comparison to American military behavior in Iraq to that of Saddam, the speaker said: “The jihad is continuing with strength, for Allah be all the credit, despite all the barbarity, the repressive steps taken by the American Army and its agents, to the extent that there is no longer any mentionable difference between this criminality and the criminality of Saddam.“
“The Pentagon’s figures indicate an increase in the number of your killed and injured in addition to the massive material losses, not to mention the collapse of troop morale and the increase of the suicide rates among them,“ the bin Laden voice said.
Speaking directly to the American people, the speaker said: “You can rescue whatever you can from this hell. The solution is in your hands, if their (US troops’) situation matters to you at all.“

Europe Eyes Iranian Gas
SHANGHAI, China, Feb. 20--The European Union, keen to diversify its natural gas supplies after disruptions from major exporter Russia, might boost energy ties with Iran if a nuclear row could be resolved, its energy chief said on Monday.
“Iran is a partner and could be a more important partner in energy. It has huge natural gas reserves,“ Andris Piebalgs said in an interview on the sidelines of an energy forum in Shanghai, Reuters reported.
But he stressed that a resolution of Iran’s efforts to enrich uranium domestically must be reached before any energy projects can be contemplated.
“As long as there’s diplomatic contact, I believe a solution can be found... But as long as this issue (uranium enrichment) remains, we can’t move forward on other energy cooperation.“
Iran, which has the world’s second-largest natural gas reserves behind Russia, is anxious to secure new customers as it seeks to catch up with competitors in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) boom and struggles to build new pipelines.
Iran expects output of 25 million cubic meters of gas per day from each phase of the giant South Pars gas field. Its oil minister recently said the country had discovered a large natural gas field on the Gulf island of Kish, which could have similar output to the two phases of the South Pars field.
Iran exports natural gas to Turkey, but not further into Europe. A proposed pipeline through Pakistan to India is under active discussion but has yet to be confirmed.
Natural gas supply is particularly crucial for the EU, which is facing increasing reliance on external sources of energy, as oil and gas fields in the North Sea mature and as its laws call for lower emissions from power plants and industry.

Cultural Parameters Highlighted
TEHRAN, Feb. 20--Culture and Islamic Guidance Minister Mohammad Hossein Saffar-Harandi said on Monday those who believe in positive changes should not ignore cultural parameters.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony for 11 public libraries in the capital, Saffar-Harandi stressed that no development takes place in a society unless cultural changes occur, IRNA reported.
“Previously we saw various institutions acting against each other, but now Tehran Municipality and Tehran’s Cultural Directorate have cooperated in opening these public libraries in the capital,“ he said.
The minister emphasized that if libraries are not administered appropriately, then problems may arise for users.
“If we assume that a person who seeks knowledge can benefit by 30 percent from libraries, then we must be assured that if vigilant librarians are present in libraries this figure can increase to 90 percent,“ he said.
Saffar-Harandi noted that his ministry’s mission remains promotion of the culture of book reading.
“If until now we have praised writers and publishers, it is high time we lauded book readers as well,“ he said.

Perspec
Israeli Worries Mount
By K. Majid
In April 2000 Israel’s former prime minister, Ariel Sharon provoked the fury of Palestinians and other Muslim nations by ordering the attack on Al-Aqsa Mosque. That irresponsible decision led to the birth of the second Intifada.
As the popular uprising against the Zionists spread in the occupied lands, Hamas along with other Palestinian groups took over the leadership of the resistance movement that over time was characterized by religious and national ideals. This is while Sharon now on his deathbed had promised that his iron fist policy would spell the end of the Intifada in less than 100 days.
Today Hamas is a political force to reckon with and if Israel and its western bank-rollers should be crazy if they think they can use money as a weapon against the Palestinians and their newly elected Hamas government.
Political experts believe in this decade there will be more bad news for the occupying power. The usurper state has already suffered humiliation and its ’invincible’ image has gone down the drain in the Muslim region.
For the first time since its illegitimate birth, Israel was forced in May 2000 to withdraw from southern Lebanon following the strong resistance from Hezbollah. The defeat was unprecedented. And now Hamas, the popular movement that has vowed to end the criminal military occupation, is forming the first truly representative government and is in no mood of compromising the values for which it was elected to power.
Before serious illness brought him down, Sharon better known as the ’Butcher of Sabra and Shatila’ had hardly anticipated the political rise of Hamas.
After being kicked out of Lebanon, he launched the policy of ’targeted assassinations’ more fiercely against Hamas leaders to weaken their resolve and break the resistance.
The unquestionable support from US new-conservatives and George Bush made the hawkish Sharon firmer in pursuing his ill intentions. Sharon and his generals gradually gave state-sponsored terrorism a new and more dangerous interpretation in their quest for power and imposing their will on the unwavering Palestinians.
Israel assassinated several Hamas leaders and Palestinian Muslims. The martyrdom of wheel chair bound Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, the charismatic leader of Hamas, is enough to demonstrate the extent to which Israel fears the Intifada and its leaders. While Hamas was rapidly losing its top leaders, it continued to uphold Yassin’s vision of resistance until the complete liberation of Palestinian lands. The late Hamas leader had long realized that peace deals like the ones Yasser Arafat had signed in no small number, had nothing for his people and were built on the basic premise of protecting Israel’s ’borders.’
Five years after the above-mentioned developments, Sharon’s incapacitation and the political and economic crises visiting the Zionist regime, Palestinians have made their choice at the ballot box. They want the tried, tested and uncorrupted Hamas leaders to manage their affairs for the next four years.
The landslide political victory of Hamas has opened new vistas for the resistance movement obviously not free of major challenges and opportunities.
Its elected leaders in parliament and government can now also pursue their agenda through political and diplomatic skills.
Aside from the huge ’Hamas earthquake’, another major concern for the US-backed occupiers is the fast increasing population of Palestinian Muslims, especially those willing to die for their cause. Israeli experts maintain that if the 2010 local council elections are held freely across the occupied territories, all councilors in different Palestinian cities be they under the control of the defeated Palestinian Authority (PA) or Israeli occupation will be Hamas members or its staunch supporters.
