Iran Pursuing Peaceful Nuclear Activities
UN Discrimination Criticized

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
KHORRAMABAD, Lorestan, March 8--President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Wednesday Iran is determined to continue its peaceful nuclear activities.
Speaking at a public gathering at Takhti Stadium in the provincial capital of Khorramabad, Ahmadinejad added that mankind is in the grip of world despotism, which is striving to make all nations subservient to them and expecting them to work for their welfare, IRNA reported.
“The Iranian nation has neither launched aggression on any country in the past nor will it surrender to the violence of other states. I would like to inform all nations, particularly those neighboring Iran, that the Iranian people seek peace, security and tranquility based on justice for the world nations,“ he said.
Noting that the Iranian nation has been the brother and friend of nations worldwide, especially the Muslim and neighboring ones, the president said, “Our nation has the potential to promote peace and security, and defend the interests of the regional countries.“
Ahmadinejad further said the Iranian nation wants to access nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, pointing out that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has not found a single document proving the country’s deviation.
“Unfortunately, given the pressure exerted upon the United Nations nuclear watchdog, it has adopted a dual approach to the issue. Our nation moves on the path of peace and security. Unlike other countries, where members of the government hardly dare to appear in public gathering, we rely upon our nation,“ he said.
Referring to Iran’s ancient culture and civilization, Ahmadinejad said the nation’s message is one of peace and friendship.

Rafsanjani:
Nat’l Unity Crucial
US Imposing Own Culture On Muslim World
TEHRAN, March 8--Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the deputy head of Experts Assembly, said on Wednesday it is crucial to uphold national unity to withstand the enemies’ plots.
Addressing the 15th Meeting of Experts Assembly, Rafsanjani said, “No matter what decision the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) makes about Iran’s nuclear issue, we must maintain our national solidarity. If we stand divided, argue and level accusations against each other or even if we remain silent, national unity will be harmed.“
Stressing that Iran is much more powerful than in the past, the senior cleric said, “We defeated America under the toughest conditions. Of course, the secret to our victory was solidarity and the directives of Imam Khomeini. Today a similar situation should exist in order to confront America’s plots.“
Rafsanjani, who is also chairman of State Expediency Council (SEC), emphasized that the interests of the Islamic system and Revolution must take precedence over personal and factional considerations.
“Many people in the world have placed their hope on the Islamic Revolution. We should not disappoint them,“ he said. He noted that the US objective in proposing the Greater Middle East Initiative is to secure its own interests in the coming decades.
“By proposing this initiative, America intends to impose its culture on the Muslim world,“ he said.
Rafsanjani stressed that Americans entered the region on the pretext of promoting development, democracy and human rights for fulfilling their own vested goals.

Cooperation With IAEA to Continue

Ali Asghar Soltanieh
VIENNA, Austria, March 8--Iran is to continue its current level of cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog despite being referred to the UN Security Council for possible punitive measures, Iranian Ambassador Ali Asghar Soltanieh said Wednesday.
He said this would be within the framework of safeguards agreements of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), AFP reported.
Iran has suspended wider cooperation, such as allowing visits to certain military sites.
“We are determined to continue our cooperation with the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) in accordance to our safeguards obligations“ under the NPT, the ambassador said.
Iran had been intending to ratify an Additional Protocol to the NPT to allow for more intensive inspections but, said Soltanieh, now “everything is put in jeopardy“.
An IAEA report on Iran’s nuclear program will now be sent to the Security Council in New York, US ambassador Gregory Schulte said at the meeting of the UN nuclear watchdog in Vienna.
Schulte made the comment to reporters after the agency finished a review of the report by its chief Mohamed ElBaradei.
“The Director General’s report will now be transmitted to New York for action by the Security Council,“ Schulte said. The council, unlike the IAEA, has enforcement powers and can impose punitive measures, including sanctions.
Schulte said the report “makes clear“ that Iran failed to meet IAEA demands made in a resolution on February 4 to suspend uranium enrichment and cooperate fully with agency inspectors.
The IAEA had reported Iran to the Security Council on February 4 but asked the council to hold off on any action until ElBaradei had made an assessment report.
The IAEA had last September found Iran in non-compliance with the NPT for hiding sensitive nuclear work and “losing international trust in the peaceful nature of its nuclear program,“ Schulte said.

World Should Give Hamas A Chance to Moderate
RAMALLAH, Occupied Palestine, March 8--Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Wednesday the world should give the militant Islamic group Hamas a chance to moderate as it prepares to form a government.
Abbas said Hamas must change its policies, but he also appealed to the international community to keep up financial support for the Palestinians and respect the results of democratic elections on Jan. 25 that brought Hamas to power, Reuters reported.
“(Hamas) is in power now and there are international commitments they are expected to deal with,“ Abbas said at a news conference with visiting Slovenian President Janez Drnovsek in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
“However, we must not push them to make a sudden transformation from the extreme right to the extreme left. We must wait and give them this chance (to transform).“
Hamas trounced Abbas’ Fatah movement in the elections partly on an anti-corruption platform. Abbas has asked Hamas to form a government, which is expected to be installed within weeks.
Hamas, whose charter calls for Israel’s destruction, has rejected calls by Abbas and the international community to recognize Israel and to respect previous Palestinian peace accords with the Jewish state.
Fatah believes in a negotiated settlement with Israel to end occupation.
Palestinian officials close to Abbas said despite the wide gap between Abbas’ political views and those of Hamas, he would try to find a way to work with Hamas and delay what they called an inevitable confrontation.
According to Palestinian law, Abbas can use his powers to overturn laws passed by a Hamas government.
But in an early challenge to Abbas, Hamas curtailed his powers to appoint some judges earlier this week in one of the militant group’s first acts in the new parliament.

Afghan Anti-Opium Campaign Begins
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, March 8--Hundreds of government troops on Wednesday began destroying opium poppy fields in southern Afghanistan, the world’s top producer of illicit opium, officials said.
The eradication campaign, reinforced by 1,500 police, was launched weeks before the harvest in southern Helmand province, the country’s main opium-producing region, provincial governor Mohammad Daud said, AFP reported.
To kick off the campaign, security forces used tractors to plough up fields, the governor’s spokesman Moheedin Khan said. “The campaign has begun. Already we’ve destroyed some poppy fields in Dishu district,“ he told AFP.
Daud last vowed to destroy all of the opium fields in two months.
“There will be no opium in this province,“ he said.
Helmand last year produced 25 percent of Afghanistan’s opium, which makes up about 87 percent of the world total. The United Nations says the area under cultivation in the province has increased by 50 percent this year.
The government has vowed to rid itself of the production of opium, the raw ingredient of heroin.
But a government and UN report has said that Afghanistan’s illicit opium crop is likely to increase sharply this year with destitute villagers planting more of the lucrative plant in defiance of a ban.

Human Rights, A Relative Consideration
TEHRAN, March 8--An official said on Wednesday human rights is a relative consideration.
Addressing the one-day conference themed “Human Rights in Today’s World: From Theory to Practice“, Mohammad Javad Larijani, the judiciary’s advisor for international affairs, added that an example of this relativity is the relationship between human rights and security, Fars News Agency reported.
“Many governments believe implementation of international commitments should not harm their security,“ he said.
Referring to the war on terror in western countries, he said, “Important sections of human rights become relative as people can be arrested without knowing what they are guilty of.“
He denounced the West for pursuing double standards regarding human rights vis-ˆ-vis Saudi Arabia, Chile, Iran, Cuba and China.
The judiciary’s advisor pointed out that inmates in American prisons are killed everyday.
“Crimes are prevalent in American and European jails, but leaders of western countries do not write a letter to (US President George W.) Bush regarding this issue,“ he said.
Larijani noted that human rights is related to culture, but the West opposes this view, “by maintaining that only one culture is correct and other cultures are faulty“.

Perspec
Contradictions Too Many
By Mohammad Taqi Roghaniha
The western world is withering under the burden of its own contradictions. This is causing serious concern among western intellectuals, the elite and politicians, and also negatively affecting public opinion in the non-western world.
Now what are these recent contradictions of sorts?
For almost a month Muslims across the globe, Asia in particular, have been protesting against the irresponsible attack on their religious values and sanctities following the publication of insulting cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in several western newspapers.
As the tense climate of the past weeks starts to cool, we can explore this ominous development with more calm and concentration.
A Danish newspaper first published the insulting drawings and had the cheek to defend the reprehensible move under the banner of “freedom of expression.“
This is one instance of the West’s contradictions that has infuriated believers of different faiths other than Islam.
Freedom of expression means freedom in disseminating thoughts that help improve transparency and open minds. No person of integrity will ever accept that such freedoms be allowed to impinge on those of others or insult their religious values and sentiments.
Some western journalists and politicians supported the drawings as a manifestation of their freedom of expression. But if and when they or their dear ones are accused of nasty things or insulted for that matter, will they embrace it as a package that comes along with freedoms? Or will they do everything possible to punish those responsible?
Take another case. The killing of Jews recognized as the holocaust during World War II. In the past few decades, westerners of various stripes have claimed that during WWII some six million Jews lost their lives in gas chambers or died in ovens built by the Nazis and their European allies.
If this crime was actually committed, it is indeed a disgrace for the “civilized Europeans.“
How can they be civilized and at the same time commit such inhuman crimes? There are a few questions here. The people responsible for the atrocities committed during WWII on both sides are mainly Christian Europeans. Can anybody single out Jesus Christ (PBUH) or Christianity because of those war atrocities?
During the two world wars tens of millions of people were murdered for which Christians are largely responsible. But is Jesus, the prophet of peace and benevolence, responsible for the heinous crimes committed by western war-mongers who kneel at his altar? But when a few narrow-minded Muslims are perceived to be involved in terror attacks, Europeans rush to denounce the entire Islamic world, make contemptuous remarks about our faith and insult the founder of the divine religion and the prophet of mercy and kindness.
Strangely enough, in the modern western society one can insult divine prophets or even reject the whole concept of prophecy or the existence of God. But nobody dare raise doubts about the holocaust and the tons of controversy surrounding it.
Moreover, nobody in the ’free west’ is allowed to engage in scientific or historic discussions about the holocaust. Those who do so face the full force of the law. This is what happened to a prominent British writer in Austria recently.
Isn’t this a blatant contradiction in the attitude of westerners who persistently claim to be free from religious and social constraints of the type that may violate their much prized and publicized human rights?
Why can a historic development not be analyzed from different dimensions? How is it that freedom of expression does not count in this case? Reflecting on the diverse aspects of the holocaust is beyond the scope of this column. But what is intended is to focus on a small area of contradictions in the western attitude and thought.
There is no shortage of such double standards in the west, especially when its politicians, particularly in America, seek to promote their brand of military and political interests.
When this happens, westerners themselves ignore their own twisted versions of rights and freedoms. Imprisoning hundreds of people on flimsy charges of cooperating with Al-Qaeda in Guantanamo without trial or right of defense contradicts basic norms of human rights, the universal charter guiding these rights, and laws governing the West. But this inhumane attitude is routinely defended as necessary in the interest of security!
The good omen is that many respected citizens in the West have realized that such contradictions exist and they themselves react to them. This has helped people in other parts of the world to also demonstrate their frustration and anger over the outrageous western double standards.
How much longer do western politicians and their minions think they can continue on this destructive path?
