US Still Playing Bully
047298.jpg
Gholam Hossein Elham
TEHRAN, March 18--Government spokesman Gholam Hossein Elham Saturday said Iran will never abandon its fundamental stance vis-ˆ-vis the US and still believes the US is a bully and has imperialistic intentions.
Addressing his last press conference in the current Iranian year, he said, “The proposal of talks with the US, only pertains to Iraq and has nothing to do with resumption of ties (with the US).“
He added “the government’s stance toward America has not changed. As long as America pursues satanic and imperialistic policies, we will continue to resist it and challenge its hegemony. Iran has not stepped back from its policies the least bit and will never accept US hegemony. Talks with America over Iraq should not be seen as Iran retreating or succumbing to US domination.“
According to ISNA, the spokesman noted, “Talks on Iraq are important for us. Iran is doing its best so that a popular government takes power in Baghdad, which could return calm, and tranquility and ensures that country’s independence.
We will not hesitate to help in every possible manner to help The Iraqis get rid of the occupiers. Iraq is our neighbor.
Iran has so far rendered all forms of assistance for helping establish peace, stability and an independent and popular government in Iraq. All assistance has been extended on
the request of the Iraqi government.“
Regarding the recent terrorist attack in Zahedan, he noted, “This incident had foreign support. Creating insecurity and disorder in the country are among the objectives of the enemies and those who cannot tolerate the growth and independence of Iran. The enemies have on several occasions resorted to such ominous acts and each and every time they were defeated. They should realize that they cannot succeed with such ugly moves.“
Late Thursday, bandits blocked the main Zabol-Zahedan Road, injured and martyred several innocent citizens of Sistan and Baluchestan province and escaped to Afghanistan. The terrorist attack left 21 people dead and seven injured.

Iran Daily would like to wish all its dear readers a Very Happy Norouz. We pray Allah bestow on you all good health, success and peace in the New Year. This year the national festival (March 21) also coincides with the 40th day martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS). For this we express condolences to all believers in true Islam, freedom and the lofty goals for which the Second Imam of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) Household was martyred. The next edition of Iran Daily will be on the newsstands on April 3.

Poll:
Majority Americans
Say Bush Mishandling Iraq
WASHINGTON, March 18--More than two thirds of Americans think President George W. Bush is mishandling events in Iraq and almost a third believe civil war there is imminent, according to a Harris Poll published Friday.
More US adults are pessimistic about the situation in Iraq since the bombing of the Askariya shrine and the ensuing sectarian violence, a nationwide survey found, AFP reported.
Sixty-eight percent of those interviewed gave a negative rating of Bush’s current handling of events in Iraq, and 30 percent were positive.
The president’s ratings slipped from a previous survey in January, in which 61 percent were negative and 36 percent positive.
Sixty-one percent doubted that US policy in Iraq would be successful, up from 55 percent in January, while only 20 percent were confident, compared with 26 percent previously.
The Harris poll confirmed an erosion of public support for Bush’s policy in Iraq. A Gallup survey published Thursday showed support for keeping US troops in Iraq had reached its lowest point since the US-led invasion to topple Saddam Hussein on March 19, 2003.
Harris online surveyed 2,435 US adults between March 8 and 14.

3,700 Community Elders Elected
TEHRAN, March 18--Head of a special committee to establish the Association of Tehran Neighborhood Elders Rasoul Khadem Saturday said so far 3,700 elders have been selected in different neighborhoods of the capital by the people.
Speaking to IRNA, he added, “From this figure 2,590 people are main members and 1,110 people are alternate members. The local election was held in two phases and over 350,000 citizens of Tehran cast ballots,“ he told IRANA.
According to the Tehran councilor “Although this election was held toward the end of the current Iranian year and many did not have time to show up at the polling stations, I must say that the event was received quite enthusiastically.“
He recalled that all complaints regarding the second phase of the election, which was held on Friday, will be examined Saturday and the results will be announced on Sunday.
Khadem, who also is head of the Cultural and Social Commission of Tehran City Council, said the elected elders would start their activities in mid-April.

Terrorists Filmed
Zahedan Crime Scene
TEHRAN, March 18--Commander of Islamic Republic of Iran Police (IRIP) said Saturday that perpetrators of terrorist crimes committed Thursday at the Zabol-Zahedan roadway (Sistan-Baluchestan province) had disguised as policemen.
Brigadier-general Esmail Ahmadi-Moqaddam told ISNA that travelers saw 12 of the criminals filming the crime scene during which they killed 22 people.
The killers entered Iranian territory from rugged mountainous areas near the Afghan border region that can only be controlled from the air.
“The murderers escaped when police arrived at the scene, and
the police rushed the wounded people to nearby hospitals,“ Ahmadi-Moqaddam added.
Meanwhile, an MP from Zahedan, Hosseinali Shahriyari told Fars News Agency that despite their hard work and efforts,
the police bear responsibility for the incident in Zahedan.
As the governor-general of the province, governor of Zahedan and other provincial officials were passing through the area, police was obliged to further tighten security in that region, he noted.
“We call on the Interior Minister Mostafa Pourmohammadi to deal with those who failed in their duties.
Residents of Sistan-Baluchestan province have demanded the dismissal of the local IRIP commander, the lawmaker was quoted as saying.

Ganji Will Be
Freed March 30
TEHRAN, March 18--Jailed journalist, Akbar Gangi, has been granted a week’s leave by the Tehran Prosecutor’s Office, deputy Tehran prosecutor for prison affairs, Mahmoud Salarkia, told ILNA on Saturday.
“Ganji has been allowed to spend seven days with his family for the Norouz holidays and he will be released from prison on March 30,“ the official said.
Ganji’s six-year prison term officially ended on March 17. But Salarkia said his official release has been delayed due to his previous “unjustified absences“ when he was on leave from prison.

UNSC Talks Continue
UNITED NATIONS, March 18--Members of UN Security Council (UNSC) here Friday ended talks behind closed doors on Iran’s nuclear program but failed to reach agreement on the langauage of the proposed statement.
France and Britain made revisions in the previous statement to narrow the gap between their stance and those of China and Russia on the one hand, and the United States on the other. The changes, however, were not accepted, IRNA reported.
Representatives from China and Russia said they would consult the proposed changes to the text of statement with their respective governments and announce the results latr.
The five veto-wielding states of the Security Council, the US,
Britain, France, Russia, and China, have held four rounds of unsuccessful talks on Iran in recent days.
US ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, who hardly ever misses an opportunity to attack Iran, told reporters the next session was slated for Tuesday.

Abbas Set to Approve Hamas Gov’t
RAMALLAH, Occupied Palestine, March 18--Moderate Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas is set to give his reluctant approval to a narrow Hamas-led government following the Islamic group’s upset victory in January parliamentary elections, aides said Saturday.
The Palestinian Authority president was headed to Hamas’s Gaza bastion to receive the line-up from prime minister designate Ismail Haniya Sunday after Hamas drew a line on four weeks of talks aimed at forming a broad government of national unity, AFP reported.
Abbas’s mainstream Fatah movement, which was trounced by Hamas in the elections, made clear it would neither join nor support the new government in parliament, but aides said the Palestinian leader would not use his executive powers to block it.
“In my view, the president is not going to reject the Hamas government because he is not willing to block a government that will win a confidence vote in parliament,“ said Abbas’s spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina.
Hamas won 74 of the 132 seats in the Palestinian Legislative Council in January’s elections against just 45 for Fatah, giving it a comfortable majority.
“(Abbas) will nonetheless ask the new government to respect the programs of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian National Authority as any other path will lead to isolation and the collective punishment of the Palestinian people,“ Abu Rudeina said.
Hamas said it had been left no choice but to draw a line on the protracted coalition talks with minority factions in parliament but stressed it remained open to power sharing.
“There is no longer any time to lose--we are facing public pressure,“ Hamas spokesman Salah Bardawil told AFP.

Kuwait Gov’t Warned Against Politicizing Bourse
KUWAIT CITY, March 18--The Kuwaiti government was urged by businessmen and analysts Saturday not to intervene in the movement of share prices on the Kuwait Stock Exchange, warning of serious risks if it does.
“The role of authorities is to issue legislation and draw up policies besides monitoring and supervision,“ the president of the influential Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Ali al-Ghanim, told a conference on the bourse, AFP reported.
“But intervention in the movement of (share) prices, under any banner, is not the responsibility of the state,“ said Ghanim in reference to comments by officials of government plans to lift the sagging market.
“Any government intervention in (price) movement ... will harm the market and small investors and speculators,“ Ghanim said.
The Kuwait Stock Exchange Index rebounded strongly Saturday, making its largest single-day gain and closing up 5.2 percent following heavy losses for six weeks.
The rise came after Commerce and Industry Minister Yussef al-Zalzalah met on Thursday with a number of financial and investment officials to study measures to boost the bourse.
Local newspapers reported that the meeting discussed establishing a 1.7-billion-dollar fund to stabilize the market. Jassem al-Saadun, head of Al-Shall Economic Consultants, warned that if the government intervened to boost share prices, a major crisis is bound to happen in the future.

Perspec
Mistaken Cause
By Amin Sabooni
America’s war president was wrong. Today three years ago George Bush bombed his way into Iraq with the unflinching support of his friend in 10 Downing Street. Bush and Blair initially told a shocked word and their own constituencies that their former pet in Baghdad had weapons of mass destruction that must be taken out.
As it soon turned out Saddam Hussein did not have the banned weapons.
When the March 19, 2003 invasion started going the wrong way, George and Tony decided to play second fiddle to “concerns“ over the WMDs. Their ’focus’ soon shifted on the so-called global war on terrorism. To conceal the initial lie and dishonesty, the US and British leaders came up with new stories that Saddam had working relations with Al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups seriously threatening America.
This time again the US-UK package of horrible lies was exposed. International public opinion, or whatever that means, was not late in finding that almost all the intelligence related to the terror connections were faulty, flawed and manipulated by spin doctors in London and Washington to fit a callous political agenda.
When the anti-terror campaign too emerged as another fake story few in the free world cared about or wanted to listen, America and Britain got desperate.
In their search for desperate solutions, the two most despised men in the Muslim World ordered their war councils to come up with something fresh to justify the illegal invasion and occupation of the Arab country.
What better reason than the export of democracy? The new plan floated across frontiers to defend US-UK atrocities in Iraq, was laced with rotten theories based on replacing dictatorship with democracy.
As if the oppressed peoples in Iraq and other Muslim-Arab countries did not know that throughout history the oppression and tyranny of their unelected rulers has been strongly backed by US and British administrations of various stripes.
Three years into the unprovoked conflict, more than 150,000 Iraqi men, women and children have been killed by and because of the US-led occupation and an equal number maimed. Not to mention the millions pauperized and rendered refugees in their own country.
Iraqis in no small number and not necessary hostile to the US occupation now believe America and the occupation are indeed a huge part of their problem, not the solution.
Having moved from invasion, to occupation, a full-fledged military conflict, sectarian violence and revenge killings, the war-weary Iraqis fear the worst. Pundits and politicians are talking about the insurgency getting worse and drifting towards civil war in a country that has never ever in its history witnessed fighting between the majority Shiites and minority Sunnis.
Mind you, as the brutal war enters its fourth year amid all the deceit and deception, Messrs Bush and Blair won’t accept responsibility for their horrible mistakes and visibly failed strategies.
To the contrary, Bush the serial liar and murderer of innocent Iraqi civilians hardly loses an opportunity to tell his audiences that “Iraq is moving away from dictatorship to democracy.“ As usual Blair is at hand to justify the dangerous mess. Very recently he was quoted as saying that “Anyone would stand up for democracy against terrorism!“
As Iraq burns day in and day out, Americans who still believe in human values and dignity are coming to grips with a grim reality: their soldiers are risking their lives in a foreign desert and are actually dying for a mistaken cause.
In late November America’s bomber chief executive said, “We want to win, and I don’t want the troops to come home without having achieved victory. We will achieve our objective.“
But today things are much different than what Bush and company may have anticipated. All the signs are that American with all its deadly military power feels it is out of control. This is perfectly understandable because it is true. The White House set out looking for short-term solutions in Iraq that have now become long-term problems, to say the least.
Whatever the outcome of the conflict in Iraq, one thing is certain. America will not win this war because its president continues to lie at every step. The chaos, death and destruction in that country engineered by the Bush and Blair teams demands self-examination not self-serving nonsense that only fools would believe.
Given the current state of affairs, the architects of the Iraq war now trying hard to hide their dangerous failures are trapped and immobilized as they fast run out of time and ideas.
As the bullying militarists try to prevail, things will only get much worse for the disgraced warmongers and regime changers.
