BANDAR ABBAS, Hormuzgan, Aug. 27--On the third day of the wargames titled “Zarbat-e Zolfaqar, a long-range and super modern missile ’Saqeb’ (piercing) was successfully test-fired, the spokesman of the wargames said on Sunday.
Speaking to IRNA, Rear Admiral Habib Sayyari added that among the features of this missile are its high range and speed as well as precision.
He noted that the missile has vast destructive powers and can be launched from all floating vessels.
The missile was designed and built jointly by the Navy, in cooperation with domestic universities and industries.
On Saturday, the optimized surface-to-sea missile ’Nour’ was successfully test-fired in the maneuvers.
“The ongoing wargames in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman waters are unique in terms of the missiles and the scope of geographical area involved,“ he said.
Sayyari further said that the number and diversity of new weapons, torpedoes and missiles used in the wargames was remarkable compared to those of previous maneuvers.
The wargames, which are being carried out in five phases in 16 provinces, began last Saturday.
The spokesman added that different types of land-to-sea, surface-to-surface and air-to-surface missiles were successfully tested on the second day of the wargames.
Sayyari also said that over 1,500 well-equipped special teams were also participating in this stage of the wargames, which are aimed at ensuring the army’s preparedness and defense capabilities as well as testing new weapons.

’Hezbollah’ on Newsstands
TEHRAN, Aug. 27--“Iran’s Hezbollah“ will launch its first nationwide newspaper on Monday, the political party’s spokesman said on Sunday.
Mojtaba Bigdeli also told IRNA that the paper ’Hezbollah’ has been published on a trial basis since July 25, but the official release will be on Aug. 28, concurrent with the birth anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).
He noted that the paper is targeting an initial edition of 50,000 nationwide.
The spokesman said measures are underway to launch the news agency and the newspaper simultaneously.
“However, if we run into technical problems, the news agency will go on stream by Sept. 9, concurrent with the birth anniversary of Imam Mahdi (May God Hasten His Reappearance),“ he said.
Referring to the inauguration of the party’s planned satellite TV channel ’Kheibar’, Bigdeli noted that the satellite channel will become operational by March 2007.

’Iran’ Chief Acquitted
TEHRAN, Aug. 27--Tehran’s Penal Court on Sunday acquitted managing director of the banned Persian daily ’Iran’, Gholamhossein Eslamifard.
The court session was presided over by Judge Mohammad Saremi in the presence of Press Jury, IRNA reported.
After the prosecutor read out the charges, the judge asked Eslamifard to defend himself.
Referring to the history of ’Iran’ as a government-affiliated daily, Eslamifard said, “Although I sincerely accept that the necessary care was not taken in printing the provocative cartoon, it is obvious that there were no ill intentions or any desire to insult the Azari population of the country. It must be noted that a major portion of the personnel of the daily are Azari.“
He also pointed to apologies regularly offered by the daily’s staffers to the Azari population of the country in various interviews.
On May 23, ’Iran’ was closed down upon the decision of the Press Supervisory Board after its Friday edition “Iran Jomeh“ printed a provocative article and cartoon that stirred several days of unrest in the east and west Azarbaijan provinces.

Olmert Facing
Tough Probe Options
BEIT-UL-MOQADDAS, Aug. 27--Embattled Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert mulled Sunday whether to set up a powerful state commission to examine the conduct of the Lebanon war amid increasing calls for him to do so.
Ahead of the government’s weekly meeting on Sunday, the increasingly unpopular premier huddled with top aides late into the night, weighing the options between a state commission and a government inquiry.
The premier “held consultations over the nature of the commission that will be charged with investigating the failures during the campaign against Hezbollah,“ government spokesman Avi Pazner told AFP.
No decision on an inquiry was announced at the end of the cabinet meeting.
Following the month-long offensive against Hezbollah, which left 160 Israelis dead but failed to destroy the Shiite militant group or stop it from firing rockets into northern Israel, public pressure has been growing for Olmert to establish a state commission. Some 63 percent of Israelis want Olmert to resign and 74 percent are dissatisfied with his leadership, according to an opinion poll released by the top-selling Yediot Aharonot daily on Friday.

Iran took another important step towards using nuclear energy for economic development. On Saturday, Iran inaugurated a heavy water plant near the city of Arak in Markazi province and once again demonstrated to the world that socioeconomic development with the help of nuclear energy is high on its agenda.
The peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program is public knowledge and Tehran has made this known at the highest levels of its power structure.
In tandem with the Islamic state’s good intentions, the heavy water plant was inaugurated with utmost transparency for the benefit of the international public opinion and those who care about such sensitive issues without any strings attached.
Iran once again proved that it is candid in its nuclear operations and has nothing to conceal. Nevertheless, some governments for obvious reasons doubt Tehran’s plans and will not miss any opportunity to make new charges, despite their past failures.
During the inaugural ceremony of this important project, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reiterated that nuclear weapons is not an issue in Iran because our republic is no threat to any other country, including the lawless Zionist regime in Israel, which remains the No. 1 enemy of all regional peoples.
Strangely but nor surprisingly, today the very regimes, who have blood on their hands and are better known for blatant violations of human rights across continents, are questioning the direction of our nuclear program. Some of them are top candidates for a place on the global list of war criminals.
The chief executive’s statements could not be more to the point. Unambiguous and honest as it is, Tehran’s message now is that it is pursuing its legitimate rights without fear or favor, and that it will not give in to intimidation by evil powers or accept their hypocrisy and hegemony.
To demonstrate its goodwill, in its response to the proposals by the 5+1 group, Tehran has said it will agree to suspend uranium enrichment for a limited time under specific conditions, within the framework of building more confidence with the international community, for protecting its inalienable rights.
By underlining the peaceful nature of its nuclear program and keeping the door open to IAEA inspections for years together, Iran has shown that it is not a threat to any country and should not be perceived as such. However, this does not mean that it would look the other way when it comes to defending the rights of the people.
Iran is prepared, has the ability and possesses all that it takes to defend its rights on the international scene if that is what is required.
It must be added that any uncalculated move by the US or some European states against Iran’s nuclear program would be disastrous and bring in its wake adverse consequences for the western powers more than anybody else.
Israel’s failed conquest in Lebanon proved that even arrogant powers, despite all their pomp and show, can miscalculate only to make a bad situation worse.
Most US, Israeli and western observers, powerhouses and think tanks have acknowledged that Bush’s America and the Zionists were humiliated by a small guerrilla organization in Lebanon fighting a war of liberation.
Commonsense, though in short supply across the world today, demands that governments and those who decide policy proceed with extra caution and avoid haste.
