BERLIN, Nov. 6--Bayern Munich showed the spirit of champions coming from two goals down to secure a point in a 2-2 draw at Schalke 04 on Sunday.
Bayern looked to be heading for their fourth defeat of the season after Schalke scored twice inside the first 20 minutes but Andreas Ottl on the stroke of half-time and Dutch forward Roy Makaay restored parity, AFP said.
“The first goal was vital for us as it lifted our spirits,“ said Bayern coach Felix Magath. “We were not in the game in the first half hour but after that we were the better team and deserved a point.“
Despite salvagaing a point the reigning champions will view it as a missed chance to close the gap on league leaders Werder Bremen, who drew 1-1 with Energie Cottbus on Saturday.
Cameroon striker Francis Kioyo produced an unstoppable dipping shot on 49 minutes to put Cottbus ahead before Croatian substitute Ivan Klasnic equalized on 76 minutes to rescue a point.
“That is not enough because I always want the three points,“ explained Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf. “We did not manage to take our chances and they made it difficult for us by packing men behind the ball.“
Bayern are now third in the standings three points adrift of Bremen while Schalke remain level on points with Bayern in fourth.
VfB Stuttgart stay in second following their 4-2 win at Alemannia Aachen on Saturday.
“My team showed there is some life in them yet,“ said Schalke boss Mirko Slomka. “Unfortunately we only got a point. Their goal just before the break was the turning point and they showed their class after that.“
The match began with a protest from the Schalke fans who refused to support their team for the opening 19 minutes and four seconds of the match--the length of the protest coincides with the year the club was founded, in 1904.
Upset by exits from the UEFA Cup and the German Cup, Schalke fans were silent but had something to shout about as Danish international Peter Lovenkrands put them ahead after 13 minutes.
Levan Kobiaschvili made it 2-0 seven minutes later but Bayern hit back to take a point although they have still not won in Schalke since October 1998.
In Sunday’s other game Japanese international striker Naohiro Takahara scored the only goal of the game as Eintracht Frankfurt defeated Borussia Monchengladbach 1-0.
Elsewhere the pressure on SV Hamburg coach Thomas Doll shows no sign of letting up with his side falling to a 1-0 reverse at VfL Wolfsburg.
German international Mike Hanke scored after 19 minutes to leave Hamburg fourth from bottom of the table with just one win in ten games.

Clijsters
Victorious at Home
HASSELT, Belgium, Nov. 6--Former world number one Kim Clijsters defeated qualifier Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to defend her home tournament title here on Sunday.
The win lifted Clijster’s morale ahead of next week’s Tour Championships in Madrid as she made a successful return to action after three months out with an injured wrist, AFP said.
Clijsters had been expected to sweep her 21-year-old opponent aside, but she was given a stern test as the former top junior unleashed a barrage of big shots especially on the forehand side.
Kanepi silenced the crowd by winning the second set and she held firm until 3-3 in the decider before Clijsters finally got the break she needed going on to win in four minutes short of two hours.
“It was tough that’s for sure, but you have to bear in mind that I was coming back from injury,“ Clijsters said. “I can now go to Madrid and know I have nothing to lose.“
It was Clijsters’ third title win of the year and the 33rd of her career.
Kanepi, the first Estonian to reach a WTA final, said it had been a dream week for her.
“I think the people back home will be aware of what I achieved here,“ she said.

Second League
Defeat for Chelsea
LONDON, Nov. 6--Tottenham Hotspur and England winger Aaron Lennon condemned champions Chelsea to a second league defeat of the season on Sunday when Spurs won their London derby 2-1 at White Hart Lane.
Lennon rifled in on 52 minutes to secure Spurs their first win over Chelsea in 33 league meetings and their first at home over their rivals since 1987.
“It was a great win, we were stronger than them today,“ Spurs manager Martin Jol told Sky sports, reported Reuters.
Defeat kept Chelsea in second place on 25 points, three behind leaders Manchester United who thumped Portsmouth 3-0 on Saturday.
Chelsea led through Claude Makelele’s thunderbolt from 30 meters on 15 minutes but defender Michael Dawson levelled with a glancing header 10 minutes later.
Chelsea and England captain John Terry was sent off 18 minutes from time after he was shown a second yellow by referee Graham Poll for holding.
Poll’s performance left Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho fuming, the Portuguese saying the official, who booked seven other players, had “wanted to be part of the show“.
He disallowed a goal from Didier Drogba which he can only explain,“ said Mourinho.
Chelsea almost snatched a point four minutes from time but Dutch winger Arjen Robben struck the post with a curling strike.
Earlier, substitute Marlon Harewood struck two minutes from time to hand West Ham United a 1-0 win over Arsenal as tempers flared at Upton Park while Aston Villa beat Blackburn Rovers 2-0 at home.
Harewood converted Matthew Etherington’s cross to secure a second successive league win for West Ham, who moved out of the bottom three and up to 15th.
The goal prompted an unsightly shoving match on the touchline between managers Alan Pardew and Arsene Wenger with the pair needing to be separated after Wenger took exception to Pardew’s exuberant celebrations.
Harewood scored 12 minutes after spurning the best chance of the game, with his shot smothered by Jens Lehmann.
Arsenal, who remain fifth, created few clear-cut openings but had strong penalty claims turned down when Jonathan Spector appeared to foul Alexander Hleb.
Arsenal’s Dutch forward Robin van Persie needed brief attention after he was felled by a coin thrown from the crowd.
It struck the back of his head as he waited to take a throw-in late in the first half.

Bartoli Wins
Quebec Title
QUEBEC CITY, Nov. 6--Second-seeded Marion Bartoli of France whitewashed eighth-seeded Olga Poutchkova of Russia 6-0, 6-0 in the Bell Challenge final on Sunday.
Victory allowed Bartoli to close her year as she started it. She won her first career title in Auckland, New Zealand in the first week of January. Last month she won in Tokyo to debut in the top 20 rankings, reported Reuters.
Despite the final scoreline, Poutchkova will make her top 40 debut in Monday’s new rankings. She started the year outside the top 200.
The result also capped a remarkable tear at the end of the season for the 19 year old. After losing to Bartoli for the first time in the US Open first round, Poutchkova has reached her first two career WTA finals, a semifinal, and two quarterfinals.

NEW YORK, Nov. 6--Allen Iverson nailed 31 points and dished out 13 assists as the Philadelphia 76ers continued their perfect start to the new season with a 107-98 win over a sluggish Miami Heat on Sunday.
With Iverson in top gear and the Heat without an injured Shaquille O’Neal, the 76ers pulled away in the third quarter out-scoring the NBA champions 28-16 on their way to a third straight win to remain the Eastern conference’s only unbeaten team, reported Reuters.
O’Neal missed the game with a bruised left knee he injured during the Heat’s win over New Jersey on Friday.
He will be examined by team doctors when the team returns to Miami.
Kyle Korver contributed 22 points to the Philadelphia cause while Andre Iguodala chipped in with 20 and Chris Webber helped out with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

David West poured in 20 points and Chris Paul had 12 points to go along with 16 assists as the New Orleans Hornets beat the Houston Rockets 96-90 in their home opener, improving their record to 3-0.
The Hornets received a boisterous welcome from the capacity crowd at New Orleans Arena but will continue to play most of the their home games this season in Oklahoma City because of the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.

Sevilla On Top
MADRID, Spain,
Nov. 6--Sevilla knocked Barcelona off the top of the Primera Liga on Sunday after goals from Frederic Kanoute and Adriano Correia gave them a 2-0 home win over Osasuna.
The UEFA Cup holders have 21 points, one ahead of Barcelona who were held to a 1-1 draw at Deportivo Coruna on Saturday, reported Reuters.
Real Zaragoza climbed to third on 19 points with a 3-1 home win over Getafe, and Real Madrid slipped down to fourth with 17 after losing 2-1 at home to Celta Vigo.
Sevilla were set on course for their fifth straight home win in the league when Mali striker Kanoute scored from the penalty spot early in the second half, taking his tally for the season to eight.
Two minutes from time Kanoute fed Brazilian midfielder Adriano to finish off a swift counter-attack that made sure of the win.
Zaragoza moved to within two points of the leaders with their victory over 10-man Getafe.
Bernd Schuster’s side lost defender Ruben Pulido to a red card after just 11 minutes but managed to level after Uruguayan Carlos Diogo had put Zaragoza in front.
However, second-half strikes from Argentine Diego Milito and Brazilian Ewerthon sealed the win for Zaragoza.
Below them Real Madrid failed to capitalize on Barca’s slip up as they suffered their first defeat of the season in the Bernabeu.
Celta’s Brazilian striker Nene put the visitors in front after 36 minutes with their first effort on target, but Real leveled just before the break when Emerson headed home from a corner.
Former Atletico Madrid midfielder Jorge struck Celta’s winner from the edge of the area eight minutes from time.
Fifth-placed Valencia are a point behind Real and play Espanyol away in Sunday’s late game.
In the day’s other games, Villarreal came from behind to beat Real Betis 3-2 at home and Recreativo Huelva grabbed a stoppage time winner to overcome Gimnastic 2-1.

Scott
Puts Behind Frustrating Year
ATLANTA, USA,
Nov. 6--Australian Adam Scott put behind him a frustrating year of several close calls on the PGA Tour with a three-shot victory at the season-ending Tour Championship Sunday.
The world number four, three ahead at the start of the day, survived a nervy finish before completing a four-under-par 66 in the final round at East Lake Golf Club, reported Reuters.
World number two Jim Furyk, the highest-ranked player in the elite 27-man field, secured second place at eight under by shooting a best-of-the-day 65 with fellow American Joe Durant (67) a further shot back in third.
Retief Goosen, champion at East Lake two years ago, birdied two of the last four holes for a 67 and fourth spot at six under.
Although 2002 winner and playing partner Vijay Singh briefly trimmed Scott’s overnight lead to two with a birdie at the par-four first, the Australian tightened his grip on the tournament with an immaculate display over the first 15 holes.
The 26-year-old reeled off birdies at the third, seventh, ninth and 10th before picking up his fifth shot in spectacular style, holing out from a greenside bunker at the par-four 13th.
After pumping his right fist in celebration, Scott parred the next two holes before dropping his only shot of the day at the 16th, where he overhit the green with his approach.
However, he held his nerve over East Lake’s difficult closing stretch to finish on 11-under 269 and secure his long-awaited first PGA Tour title of the year, the eighth by an Australian this season.
