Bangladesh Beat
S. Africa in Super 8
|
|
South African cricketer Shaun Pollock fails to make his ground as the ball makes a direct hit on the stumps to run him out against Bangladesh during the super-eight match at Guyana National Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana on Sunday.
|
GEORGETOWN, Guyana, April 8--Bangladesh caused a sensational World Cup upset by beating South Africa in an extraordinary Super 8 match in Guyana, said AFP.
The Tigers amassed a brilliant 251-8, their highest ever World Cup score, with Mohammad Ashraful hitting a truly magnificent 87 from 83 balls.
In reply, South Africa were shot out for 184, with Syed Rasel, Saqibal Hasan and Abdur Razzak among the wickets.
The result improves England’s hopes of qualifying for the last four ahead of their game against Australia on Sunday.
South Africa won the toss, but erred in electing to bowl first.
The wicket got slower and slower, playing into the hands of Bangladesh’s three spinners, and South Africa struggled to get anywhere near the five runs an over they required.
Bangladesh ended up with an excellent score, especially as they too were wobbling at one stage. A solid start was undone by the recalled Andre Nel, who took three wickets in a fiery first spell.
Then Jacques Kallis had Saqibal Hasan caught in the gully by Graeme Smith, and Bangladesh were in tatters at 82-4. But when Ashraful and Aftab Ahmed came together, the duo put on 76 intelligent runs and ramped up the rate in the process.
Aftab was in disbelief when, moments after he had hit two monstrous sixes off Justin Kemp, he holed out in the deep off Makhaya Ntini.
But Ashraful continued on his merry way and played his favorite standing sweep over short fine leg, a shot which earned him several crucial boundaries.
There were also some cleanly struck, beautifully timed lofted drives that were so reminiscent of his century against Australia in another memorable win for Bangladesh in Cardiff in 2005.
Mashrafe Mortaza joined Ashraful for the final onslaught, himself smashing 25 off 16 balls as the Tigers accelerated in a frenzied last seven overs.
Ashraful was eventually caught in the deep by Charl Langeveldt off Nel to hand the bowler his first ever five-wicket haul (5-45) in ODIs.
But early on in the South Africa reply, Nel’s efforts did not quite seem enough as the Tigers produced a world-class display in the field.

Zaragoza Stun Barca

MADRID, Spain, April 8--Real Zaragoza blew the Spanish title race wide open with a 1-0 home win over reigning champions Barcelona on Saturday, the only goal of the game coming from Argentine sharpshooter Diego Milito, reported AFP.
Barcelona still lead La Liga by two points but will lose pole position with nine games remaining if Sevilla beat Racing Santander on Sunday.
“It wasn’t our night but they deserved this result. They scored and we didn’t have the capacity to change the result,“ admitted Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard.
Milito found the net after 58 minutes, chipping the ball past Barca goalkeeper Victor Valdes from close range after an outstanding pass from close to the touchline by his Argentine compatriot Andres D’Alessandro.
“This was revenge for Barca beating us here and knocking us out of the (Spanish) Cup in February. I think we were up for this game from the very first minute,“ added Milito.
Milito’s 19th goal of the season makes him the joint top scorer in the Spanish first division, and was a just reward for Zaragoza being the best side up to that point.
First half chances fell to D’Alessandro, Carlos Diogo and Sergio Garcia but Barca grimly held on until the break.
Barca almost equalized within seconds of Milito’s goal but Zaragoza goalkeeper Cesar Perez came out on top a one-on-one situation with Deco and the visitors never had a better chance in the remaining half hour.
Zaragoza are now unbeaten in seven games and are in contention to qualify for the Champions League for the first time. “Overall this was our best 90 minutes of the season. They way that Barca play means that this was always going to be an open game and so we had the chance to surprise them. We beat them by playing football,“ reflected Zaragoza coach Victor Fernandez.
Barcelona were without their three-time African Player of the Year Samuel Eto’o, who sustained a muscle strain at the top of his right leg in training earlier this week.
Media speculation in Spain suggested Eto’o had actually been left out to prevent more racist taunting of the Cameroon striker, but it was a suggestion strongly refuted by Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard.
“His absence is because he’s not fit to play. For us, it’s always better if he’s with the team,“ said Rijkaard on Friday. Eto’o threatened to walk off the pitch during last season’s match at Zaragoza after receiving racist abuse from the home crowd.

Bryan Twins Put US Into Davis Cup Semis
WINSTON-SALEM, USA, April 8--Andy Roddick invited the fans to party with him, James Blake sounded confident and Bob Bryan went as far as to predict a title.
A decisive win over Spain in front of a partisan crowd left the Americans confident they’ll end their 12-year Davis Cup drought, said AP.
The United States secured a spot in the semifinals on Saturday when the top-ranked doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan beat Spain’s Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco 7-5, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5).
Coupled with Friday’s singles wins by Roddick and Blake, it gave the United States an insurmountable 3-0 lead in the best-of-five tie, putting the Americans a step closer to their first Davis Cup title since 1995.
“Yes, this is our year,“ Bob Bryan said, drawing a roar from the sellout crowd of more than 14,000. After dropping the third set on the fast, indoor hard court, the Bryans survived two break points at 4-4 in the fourth set before closing it out in the tiebreaker.
“I was so nervous there,“ Roddick said to the fans. “But we’re all going out tonight so come along and join us. What do you think?“
The United States eliminated a Spanish squad weakened by the absence of Rafael Nadal and will next play at Sweden on Sept. 21-23. Sweden downed Argentina 3-0 on Saturday. In other quarterfinals, Germany ousted Belgium 3-0, and Russia won its doubles match to lead France 2-1.
The Bryans improved to 11-1 in the Davis Cup with a harder-than-expected match against an inexperienced team. They sealed the match on Bob Bryan’s volley at the net, two points after Mike Bryan’s net cord on Lopez’s serve gave the United States a 6-4 lead.
“They’ve been our rock every time out. Every time I’ve been on the team, they’ve given us a win,“ Blake said.
“It’s a lock, and it feels so good to have that.“ The brothers immediately embraced after the winning point, setting off a flag-waving celebration. The outcome provided a bit of revenge for the United States--Spain beat the Americans in the 2004 final on clay.
With Nadal home resting a sore foot, the United States took a 2-0 lead on Friday when Roddick beat Verdasco and Blake beat Tommy Robredo. Roddick and Blake watched the doubles match from the team area, and both took turns taking laps with the American flag.

Alonso Leading Grand Prix
|
|
Spanish Formula One driver Fernando Alonso takes the lead around the first turn during the Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit on Sunday.
|
SEPANG, Malaysia, April 8--Reigning world champion Fernando Alonso secured his first victory for McLaren as he claimed a pillar to post win in the Malaysian Grand Prix, said AFP.
Alonso, in his second race for the English team, led home Lewis Hamilton for a McLaren one-two to secure their first win since Japan in October 2005.
Briton Hamilton, 22, held off a late charge from Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen. Pole sitter Felipe Massa blew his chances when he slid off trying to pass Hamilton on lap six and finished fifth.
The 25-year-old Spaniard reckons his McLaren-Mercedes-Benz team has not made sufficient progress in recent testing to threaten Ferrari in on-track performance and needed some luck to help them win.
“It will be difficult to beat them, but I think we need to push them,“ he said.
“In Australia, they had two mechanical problems--one on assa’s car, on Saturday, and Kimi nearly on Sunday. So, we need to be there if we want to win. We have to push them to the limit.“
Finn Kimi Raikkonen won from pole to the flag in Melbourne on his debut for the Ferrari team and he and teammate Brazilian Felipe Massa performed with confident aplomb and superior performance for most of the weekend until Massa was hit by engine problems.
“I think the gap in Australia was too big, too much,“ Alonso reflected.
“Now, even if we develop the car, the gap will be closer because we made some improvements, but we still have a little bit more to do.
“But Ferrari have been quickest in both sessions, with Massa and Kimi in the top positions as well, so I think Ferrari will again be our main competitor. If we are going to be on pole position or win the race then we need to beat them. They are the team to beat at the moment.“

Nets Past Wizards
EAST RUTHERFORD, USA, April 8--Vince Carter and Jason Kidd became the first teammates with triple-doubles in the same game since Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen in 1989, leading the New Jersey Nets to a 120-114 overtime victory over the injury-ravaged Washington Wizards on Saturday night, reported AP.
Carter matched his season high with 46 points, added a career-best 16 rebounds and 10 assists. Kidd tied a career high with 16 rebounds, equaled his season high with 18 assists and added a late free throw for 10 points.
Richard Jefferson matched his season high with 27 points and the Nets finished with a franchise-record 17 3-pointers in winning for the fifth time in seven games to prevent the Wizards from clinching a playoff berth.
Antawn Jamison scored a season-high 37 points and hit a 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds left in regulation to lead Washington, which lost its fourth straight. Jarvis Hayes added a career-high 29 points for the Wizards, who lost All-Stars Gilbert Arenas (knee) and Caron Butler (hand) in the past week with major injuries.
The victory moved New Jersey within three games of Washington in the race for the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference.
In San Antonio, Tim Duncan scored 28 points, Manu Ginobili added 25, and San Antonio handed Golden State a setback in its drive for a playoff spot.
The Warriors had won four straight and were trying to match a season-high winning streak. Golden State entered the night one game behind the Los Angeles Clippers for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Jason Richardson led Golden State with 23 points.
In Orlando, Florida, Dwight Howard had 31 points and 11 rebounds, and Orlando beat short-handed Memphis to remain in eighth place in the Eastern Conference a game ahead of Indiana.

Weather Delays Yachting Solo Record Bid
SYDNEY, Australia, April 8--Bad weather forced British yachtsman Tony Bullimore to abandon the Sunday start date for his solo round-the-world record attempt but he said he was determined to begin this week, reported AFP.
Bullimore, who gained international fame in 1997 when he survived five days trapped in the upturned hull of his yacht in the freezing Southern Ocean, had hoped to leave Tasmania’s Bellerive Yacht Club on Sunday.
The 67-year-old is attempting to sail around the world in 70 days on his 31-metre catamaran Doha 2006. The previous record, set by Briton Ellen MacArthur in 2005, is 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes and 33 seconds.
Bullimore, whose team is now looking at a departure date of April 15, said he was determined to leave as soon as possible. “We can’t hang about much longer,“ he said.
“The only chance I have got of choosing my weather is at the beginning,“ he said. “Once I leave here and once I’m 100 miles out or 50 miles out or 20 miles out, that’s it.
“Whatever I get, I get. We are trying to get two or three days of right weather so it slingshots me down to New Zealand and well on my way to Cape Horn,“ he told Australian Associated Press.
Bullimore said he was concerned about the danger of winter icebergs on the 27,000 mile (43,450 kilometer) journey.
“The ice does worry me, it’s bound to,“ he said.
“It’s not as bad as people think. Most of the time you control what you are doing and you keep your eyes open and you get the information on ice movements from different weather stations, so you have got to go for it, that’s all there is to it.“ Bullimore was rescued by the Australian navy in January 1997 when they found him clinging to the overturned hull of his yacht the Exide Challenger.
Fears were again held for Bullimore’s safety in November when there was a communication blackout from Doha 2006 for 11 days as it sailed on the Indian Ocean from Qatar on its way to Hobart.
Retired navy officer Jane Mackrill, one of the Australian sailors who winched Bullimore to safety in 1997, was full of praise for the yachtsman.
