MKO Colluded With Saddam
TEHRAN, May 27--The judge who tried former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, reported on Sunday that he has seen audiovisual evidence about the involvement of the terrorist Mujahideen Khalq Organization in the crimes against Iraqis.
Jaffar Mousavi, who heads the Prosecution Team of the Special Court, also told Al-Bayyinah Al-Jadidah newspaper that documents related to MKO crimes against the people of southern Iraq and residents of Tooz Khurmatoo in southern Kirkuk have been handed over to the prosecution team, IRIB reported.
Mousavi also filed a complaint in Iraq’s Supreme Court and ordered MKO leaders to respond to charges related to assisting the former Iraqi regime’s crimes against Iraqis.
“Presently it is not in the interest of Iraq’s security to make the documents public. However, names of the victims who were killed on the orders of MKO leaders by MKO elements will be announced in the media,“ he said.
These documents include pictures showing intelligence officers of the former Iraqi regime and MKO leaders exchanging money and sensitive documents.

TEHRAN, May 27--President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad urged the nation on Sunday to ignore the bullying world powers while stressing that the domestic bank profit rate must decline to 12 percent.
In response to the letter of Central Bank Governor Ebrahim Sheibani regarding the final bank profit rate, the president said in his written directive that the government policy is to reduce the lending rate of credits and loans, ISNA reported.
“The maximum expected profit rate is 12 percent, which will strengthen production and decline inflation in the country,“ he said.
Addressing the Central Bank governor and Economy Minister Davoud Danesh-Jafari, Ahmadinejad stressed that private banks should also follow the same policy.
Noting that his government is obliged to serve people by all means, he said, “Resources of banks should be specified for production activities.“
Speaking in a public gathering in Shahreza city on the fourth day of his five-day provincial tour of Isfahan on Sunday, President Ahmadinejad said the bullying powers are unable to cause obstacle to Iran’s nuclear program.
“It will be in the interest of bullying powers to accompany the Iranian nation with regard to its peaceful nuclear program. The big powers, themselves, are aware of the issue,“ he said.
Ahmadinejad also said the Iranian nation would pay no attention to these powers and will pass the process of peaceful use of all nuclear potentials with honor.
The president stated that Iranians will resist the bullying powers based on religious orders and added, “The Iranian nation does not advocate the violation of anybody’s rights but will not let anybody violate its rights by even one iota.“
“Thanks to God, the Iranian people will take strides in the fields of science and technology strongly and wisely,“ he said.
The president’s current visit to the central Isfahan province is his 28th to various provinces of the country since the start of his initiative of bringing the government closer to the people.

Market Should Determine
Lending Rates
|
|
Mohammad Reza Bahonar
|
TEHRAN, May 27--Majlis Vice Speaker Mohammad Reza Bahonar said on Sunday the bank profit mechanism should be shaped by the market’s supply-demand cycle.
Speaking on the sideline of a meeting of Islamic Association of Engineers, Bahonar told reporters that for implementing Article 44 of the constitution, the country should head toward liberalization of the economy by facilitating bank facilities, ISNA reported.
“Bank facilities can only be regulated by ceding the shares of governmental banks and strengthening private banks at the same time,“ he said.
Bahonar pointed out that the bank profit rates were previously high and now they are low.
“What we say is that bank profit rates should be determined by the market and supply-demand mechanism, which should emerge in the course of time. Of course, a series of substantial benchmarks are needed to be specified by the government,“ he said.
Commenting on concurrently holding the upcoming Majlis and presidential elections, the lawmaker said this contradicts the constitution because the tenures of both Majlis and presidency have been specified in the constitution and no one can reduce or increase them.
The vice president pointed out that the bill on concurrently holding the elections has been sent to State Expediency Council once again.
Bahonar noted that a great deal of hue and cry has been raised over the elimination of the university entrance examination, hoping that the government will do its best for implementing the Majlis approval on eliminating university entrance exam.
“One of the main problems of the country and the youth is university entrance exam and nearly all families are concerned with it,“ he said.

Hosseini Confirms 5+1 Message
|
|
Mohammad Ali Hosseini
|
TEHRAN, May 27--Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini confirmed on Sunday Tehran has received message from certain members of Group 5+1.
Speaking in his weekly press conference, Hosseini said, “German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki. He has stressed that the EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana should strive to settle the standoff over Iran’s nuclear program through negotiations and peaceful ways,“ IRNA reported.
Group 5+1 comprises the five veto powers plus Germany.
He added that UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has also held talks with Iranian officials and laid emphasis on resolving Iran’s nuclear case through negotiations.
Asked whether Iran and EU decided to postpone talks between Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani and the EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, Hosseini said, “In telephone talks between Larijani and Solana, the two parties agreed to postpone the talks. The time and venue of talks between Larijani and Solana will be determined later.“
Commenting on talks held by Deputy Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council for International Affairs Javad Vaedi in Brussels, he said Vaedi’s talks could prepare the ground for Larijani-Solana talks.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Hosseini said it is not right to speculate about the outcome of talks between Iran and the US on Iraq scheduled for Monday.
“We cannot put certain facts together and claim no step can be taken,“ he said.
On the makeup of the Iranian delegation to attend the Baghdad talks, he said, “One or two experts may also be dispatched to Baghdad from Tehran.“
Referring to Iran’s Ambassador in Baghdad Hassan Kazemi-Qomi, who is to lead the talks as Iran’s representative, the spokesman noted that Kazemi-Qomi is one of the prominent ambassadors and aware of the developments in Iraq and the region.
Hosseini also said Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit has welcomed President Ahmadinejad’s call for resuming bilateral ties.
“Abul Gheit has called on his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki to pursue the case in future talks,“ he said.

Artificial Islands Proposed
TEHRAN, May 27--Majlis Research Center proposed that the Majlis put the development of Iran’s southern ports on its agenda.
The proposal followed the center’s studies about the consequences of setting up manmade islands in the Persian Gulf, IRNA reported.
The studies were conducted upon a request by an MP from Isfahan, Hassan Kamran.
The results of the studies, which considered legal, economic, political, military and security aspects of setting up artificial islands, show that from a legal angle each littoral state of the Persian Gulf can establish artificial islands within its territorial waters.
However, the center noted that according to Article 123 of the United Nations 1982 Convention on Marine Law where it deals with both closed and semi-closed seas, the Persian Gulf is considered a semi-closed sea.
The littoral states should cooperate with each other in different areas, including the setting up of artificial islands, it said.
Hence, any attempt by any littoral state should take place in coordination with other states and by taking all environmental effects into consideration.
From an economic perspective, if the construction of artificial islands helps improve the region’s economic conditions, attract more people from neighboring states, attract capitals and exchange goods and services among different countries, it will most probably result in mutual economic reliance of the littoral states.
The center also proposed that some Persian Gulf islands such as Abu Mousa be turned into residential areas and a place for attracting tourists.

4 Saudis Killed
In Lebanon Clashes
Death Toll Hits 78
RIYADH,
Saudi Arabia,
May 27--Four Saudi nationals of the Fatah Al-Islam militant group are among those killed in clashes with Lebanese troops in a Palestinian camp of north Lebanon, an Arab newspaper reported on Sunday.
“Up to now four Saudis have been killed in the ongoing clashes between the Lebanese Army and the Fatah Al-Islam group, but they have yet to be identified,“ the Saudi ambassador to Lebanon, Abdul Aziz Khoja, told Al-Hayat, AFP reported.
Lebanese troops have encircled Nahr Al-Bared refugee camp since May 20 when fighting broke out with the tiny Fatah Al-Islam militia that has now killed 78 people, forced thousands to flee and trapped thousands more civilians.
Almost 25 Fatah Al-Islam members, including two of its leaders, have been killed and dozens taken prisoner in the confrontation.
“We have learnt there are Saudis, Syrians, Lebanese, Algerians and people from other Arab nationals amongst Fatah Al-Islam, and they follow Al-Qaeda’s ideology,“ he said.
Fifteen of the 19 airline hijackers in the September 11 attacks against American civilians were from the Arab kingdom.
Security forces in Saudi Arabia are waging a campaign against suspected sympathizers of Al-Qaeda, which has claimed responsibility for a spate of deadly attacks in the oil-rich kingdom since 2003.
The monarchy, which was at first reluctant to admit Saudis had taken part in the September 11 attacks, has launched a media war against militants despite once backing Saudis who left to fight foreigners in places like Lebanon, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Over the past week, state media have carried a series of ’confessions’ by jailed suspects claimed to be involved in some of the prominent attacks stretching over the last four years.

Baghdad Talks
By Amin Sabooni
Even if all goes well in Baghdad between our diplomats and those from the US, nothing substantial will emerge that could be billed as a small breakthrough.
The very fact that Tehran agreed to the meeting with a sworn enemy of three decades is seen in many quarters as a respite for Bush’s America that has long behaved like a global outlaw and continues to do so despite growing condemnation at home and abroad.
And mind you it is not only Iraq or for that matter Afghanistan that King George Jr. of the Oval Office has destroyed and pauperized. The list is long and could well take up several pages if one were to jot down the shocking lawlessness of the neocon enclave that, among other things, has made the world less safe and more confused.
Suffice to say that today something is very wrong in the United States, as its government is hated all over the world. The only other ’country’ that comes second is Ehud Olmert’s Israel.
Getting terrifying marks for its military aggressiveness, Uncle Sam loves to spread fear through a whole set of levers the most apparent of which is its now demoralized military with all its offensive wherewithal. The fact that the world’s most powerful policeman and banker has not been able to get out of the rot it created in Iraq is a different story.
The poor Iraqis and Afghans aside, America has long been looking for a fight with Iran and Syria, waging a proxy war against traumatized Lebanon, dislodging Somalia, provoking Chavez’s Venezuela, threatening North Korea, trying to strangle Castro’s Cuba, pushing China to its “proper place“, lecturing the Russians on how to mind its business, warning Central Asia on how to assess its friends and foes É.
For a few weeks the rabidly pro-Israel media in western lands (it has become very difficult to see why they act so dumb) has been ranting about “hardliners and extremists“ in the Iranian press who are strongly opposed to the Baghdad talks that open today.
True, Bush is running out of precious time and his press agents are trying desperately to make something out of nothing. They love to compartmentalize Muslim mass media into hawks and doves, and Iran’s political establishment into moderates and radicals.
But the plain truth remains that when it comes to “dealing“ with arrogant America you will not find a whole lot of differences among our thinkers and public opinion makers.
After all, to what extent the US has harmed Iran and Iranians over the past half century is known to all informed minds. We only need to open our eyes and see the writing on the wall. With due respects to all those good folks who rightly contend that friends and enemies are not forever and only interests are what counts, we need to mention that in this particular case there is nothing for Iran.
Direct negotiations with one of the “axis of evil“ and the “central bank of terrorists“ do little to shed the political baggage of the recent past that the Bush-Cheney-Rice triangle used regularly to hit Tehran only because it wanted to go its own course and openly disagreed with the greedy lot in Washington, Tel Aviv and other western capitals.
Let us also not forget that the neocon apparatus had sought to use the “gains“ of the Afghan war to solidify its regional paramountcy before it launched the ill-fated Iraqi venture. Two failed military adventures have cost the American people a lot in international credibility, not to mention their mounting losses in men, money and munitions.
All things considered, public opinion in Iran is very eager to know what we stand to gain by engaging an embattled and arrogant US government. And this is no ordinary regime. It is a major destabilizing force that has brought great evil to Iran and Iraq, caused the death of more than half a million innocent Iraqis (most of them Shiites), dismantled all their major economic infrastructure and is telling the world precisely that all this death and destruction are compulsory to stabilize the strategic but volatile Middle East (read safeguarding Israel’s ’borders’.)
