Liverpool Fans Europe’s Worst
LONDON, June 5--Liverpool supporters have been described as Europe’s worst in a UEFA report that is due to be presented to UK Sports Minister this week.
According to PressTV, UEFA, which commissioned undercover police agents to compile the report over the last four years, say there have been more incidents involving Reds fans than anyone else.
The report paints a damning picture of Liverpool fans’ behavior at last month’s Champions League final in Athens.
UEFA insist those alleged incidents--with many supporters who held genuine tickets complaining of being denied entry into the stadium - were the latest in a long line of transgressions.
UEFA spokesman William Gaillard said, “The incidents involving Liverpool fans have been well known to us before the trouble at the Champions League final which involved Liverpool fans last week.“
“That was just the latest example. What other set of fans steal tickets from their fellow supporters or out of the hands of children?“
“There have been 25 incidents involving Liverpool fans away from home since 2003 and these are in the report-- most teams’ supporters do not cause any trouble at all,“ Gaillard added.
Liverpool have sent their own report to UEFA complaining about lax security measures at the final. Many supporters with forged tickets or no tickets at all managed to gain access to the stadium.
Gaillard also noted, “You must ask yourself why at the same match, with the same conditions, there was no trouble with the Milan fans--only the Liverpool fans.“

Serena, Henin Set for Rematch
PARIS, June 5--Serena Williams says she will not be affected by the crowd when she takes on Justine Henin in the quarterfinals of the French Open on Tuesday.
Williams was booed during a highly contentious semifinal against Henin in 2003--the last time they met in Paris, said AP.
“I don’t want to reflect on that anymore. I let it go. It seems like decades ago,“ said the 25-year-old.
“I’ve definitely matured a lot. If the crowd gets involved, I’m just going to zone out, focus on me.“
Williams went into the 2003 French Open as a favorite for the title having won the last four Grand Slams, but the American left Chatrier Court in tears after a three-set defeat to Henin--who went on to lift the trophy.
The match reached boiling point midway through the deciding set when Henin, a favorite of the Paris crowd, raised her hand to indicate she was not ready to receive a serve.
Williams served anyway but then claimed she was distracted and asked for two serves.
However, the umpire said he had not seen Henin’s hand signal and the Belgian refused to back up her opponent’s claim.
A tearful Williams later accused Henin of “lying and fabricating“, while Williams’ mother said the Paris crowd had “showed a lack of class and total ignorance“.
After winning her fourth-round match on Sunday, Williams admitted she had never spoken to Henin about the incident but she maintained that it would not have any bearing on Tuesday’s match.

McGuinness Triumphs at TT Opener
DUBLIN, Ireland, June 5--John McGuinness claimed his fourth straight Superbike victory at the Isle of Man TT on Monday, reported AFP.
The HM Plant Honda rider from Morecambe started favorite and he came home 26 seconds in front of Guy Martin with Ian Hutchinson a further 40 seconds back.
Lusk’s Martin Finnegan and Ian Lougher finished fourth and fifth with Northern Ireland pair Ryan Farquhar and Adrian Archibald taking the next two places.
McGuinness set a new Superbike race record and lap record of 128.04mph.
Pre-race contenders Bruce Anstey and Michael Rutter both retired on the first lap.
The first six competitors home were all riding Honda machines.
The start of Monday’s rescheduled race was put back by two hours because of mist.
Poor weather on Saturday had forced organizers to call off the race, the first of the TT’s centenary festival. The 12th TT success for McGuinness takes him third in the all-time winners list.
The emotional Englishman was delighted to win in a landmark year for the meeting.
“There was all the hype and build-up and it all came down to that race--one of the biggest and most important of the week,“ he said.
“I just got my head down and I’m not one for riding through the damp bits but I just thought ’I’m going to go for it’.
“Credit has to go to my team. I had two fantastic pit-stops--nice, calm and collected and it looks like that may have won me the race.
