The Spanish Cycling Federation on Tuesday cleared Spanish cyclist Iban Mayo, who tested positive for doping during the 2007 Tour de France, after a second test proved negative.
MADRID, Spain,
Oct. 23--Spain’s Iban Mayo has been cleared of taking performance-enhancing drugs during the Tour de France by the Spanish cycling federation.
According to Reuters, the mountain specialist tested positive for the banned blood-boosting drug erythropoietin (EPO) on 24 July, which was the Tour’s final rest day. But the 30-year-old’s second test proved negative.
The federation said there had been a mistake with the first sample taken from the Saunier-Duval rider. The Spaniard would have been suspended for a minimum of two years if his B sample had proved positive.
“It was a very bad experience because I didn’t understand what was happening but everything has turned out as I expected,“ he told Spanish newspaper Marca.
“It doesn’t seem logical nor credible,“ he said. “I’ve spent many years cycling and I can’t chuck it all in but sometimes you feel like it because there are so many injustices. The fans who like cycling don’t want to see this sort of thing. Cycling is a spectacle that involves sacrifice if not you don’t get the results.“

Wembley May Host European Final
aLONDON, Oct. 23--Wembley Stadium has been shortlisted to host the Champions League final in 2010 or 2011, reported BBC.
The rebuilt venue will be visited by a delegation from European football’s governing body UEFA this year. Berlin’s Olympia Stadion, the Allianz Arena in Munich and, in Spain, Madrid’s Bernabeu and the Mestalla in Valencia are the other stadiums in contention.
Meanwhile, Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and Dublin’s rebuilt Lansdowne Road are in contention for the UEFA Cup final. Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen, Espanyol’s Estadi Montjuic in Barcelona, the Arena Hamburg and the National Stadium in Bucharest are the other stadia being considered for that competition.
Capacity, infrastructure, facilities and functionality were listed by UEFA as the criteria under consideration for the stadia, as well as legal documentation, accommodation and airport facilities. There also remains a rotation policy between national associations.
Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick said: “We’re delighted that UEFA have shortlisted Wembley for both the 2010 and 2011 finals. It is recognition of Wembley’s place among the very best football stadiums in the world, as well as its unique tradition and history.“
The Champions League finals in 2008 and 2009 will be held at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow and the Stadio Olimpico in Rome respectively.
