Anti-Corruption Drive Still Valid
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said the judiciary should remain a refuge for the oppressed.
“The demand raised seven years ago about the heads of three branches of power resolutely fighting against economic corruption is still valid,“ Ayatollah Khamenei told a gathering of senior judicial officials and families of the martyrs of June 27, 1981.
Referring to the important projects implemented by the judiciary, the leader said these valuable moves, which took place within the framework of the judiciary’s guidelines, should continue, IRNA reported.
Ayatollah Khamenei emphasized that the judiciary should achieve the status it deserves in the Islamic society.
“This implies that the public should feel that the judiciary dispenses nothing but justice,“ he added.
The leader underlined the necessity of the judiciary utilizing the services of devoted, efficient and learned forces to reach a favorable status in the society.
He called for examining the fulfillment of the judiciary’s general policies, adding that this examination should become a yardstick for assessing the judiciary’s performance.
Ayatollah Khamenei said all judicial cases must be attended to speedily and properly, far from controversies.
“Following up the policy to reduce the number of prisoners is a good move, but we must also accept the reality that prisons exist and they must become centers for teaching virtues in light of correct management,“ he said.
On June 27, 1981, former Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Mohammad Beheshti and 72 of his companions were martyred in a bomb blast in the Islamic Republic Party’s Headquarters.
“The leadership of Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, who is a learned, devoted and knowledgeable personality, and the presence of distinguished personalities provide a good opportunity for improving the performance of the judiciary,“ he said.

Saudis Arrest 700 Islamists
Saudi Arabia has arrested 701 Islamists in recent months who were preparing attacks on oil industry installations, the interior ministry said on Wednesday.
Security forces “carried out several operations against followers of the deviant ideology and arrested a total of 701 people of various nationalities“, said a ministry spokesman quoted by the official SPA news agency.
Of those arrested, “520 are still being held for their implication in the organizational and ideological plans of the deviant ideology“.
“Deviant ideology“ is the term used by Saudi officials to describe Al-Qaeda.
The kingdom has been battling suspected Al-Qaeda militants since they launched a wave of shootings and bombings, many targeting westerners, in May 2003.
Last July, the interior ministry announced that it had started forming special security units to protect the country’s oil infrastructure from terrorist attacks.
In April 2007, the ministry said 172 terror suspects had been rounded up along with weapons and cash. Some of the militants were allegedly plotting airborne attacks on oil facilities and army bases.
Security forces thwarted an alleged Al-Qaeda attack against Saudi Arabia’s massive Abqaiq oil processing facility in February 2006. Two members of the security forces and two assailants were killed.

22 Militants Killed in Afghanistan
US-led air strikes killed 22 Taliban militants who attacked two towns in Afghanistan with rockets on Wednesday, while two more international soldiers died in explosions, officials said.
Warplanes from the US-led coalition bombed militants in eastern Paktika province overnight after the latest in a series of large-scale rebel assaults in the region, a coalition statement said, AFP reported.
Rebels armed with rocket launchers and machineguns attacked the province’s Sarobi district center late Tuesday but were pushed back by Afghan forces, the statement and a spokesman for the coalition said.
Militants later attacked the district center of neighboring Gomal, forcing the Afghan security forces to call in coalition warplanes for help, the spokesman said.
“When coalition air support arrived, the 22 militants who attacked the (Gomal) district center were positively identified and killed,“ the coalition statement said.
The operation targeted a “militant leader known to conduct financing operations, facilitate foreign fighters and smuggle narcotics in the area,“ the statement said.
Several weapons, suicide-vests and a cache of drugs were found and destroyed, it added.
Also in Helmand, a soldier in the US-led coalition was killed and three others were wounded when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb on Wednesday, although it was not clear if they were taking part in the same operation.

Greek Misstep
By A. Khalili
A function of normal diplomatic ties governing nations and states is that third parties strictly not be allowed to violate interaction between the two sides. It also obliges each side not to allow its territory to be used by governments or groups for hostile acts against the other.
The recently reported offensive Israeli war drills in parts of Greece, which is an ancient civilization, shocked politicians and pundits alike in many parts of the globe.
Moreover, exposure of the games by one of America’s establishment media, The New York Times, one month after the maneuvers is pretty dubious and questionable, to say the least.
However, what is more unfortunate from the Iranian perspective is that western and Zionist political camps and their media outlets claimed that the Israeli maneuvers in parts of Greece and Tunisia were aimed at preparing the lawless regime in Tel Aviv to hit Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Iran and Greece are two of the very few ancient civilizations with deep roots. The two countries have enjoyed normal ties since time immemorial and are key players also on the world cultural scene.
Our two countries along with Italy and Egypt are seen as founders of civilization in the Mediterranean and Middle East regions, and in recent years have exchanged several delegations to help facilitate cultural dialogue among nations. The Iranian people and government have perpetually viewed Greece in a positive light.
Interestingly, while relations between Iran and the European Union over the past three decades have been full of ups and downs, Iran-Greece ties have been normal, and by accounts sustainable.
Some regional observers rightly hold the view that probably one of the intentions of the Zionist regime in staging the war games over Greek airspace was aimed at undermining Athens-Tehran relations. That the Greek government made available its airspace to a visibly criminal and inhumane regime will naturally lead to change in the attitude of Iranians and the largely Muslim region toward Athens.
The corrupted Zionist ruling establishment does not possess the means and stature to contemplate military action against Iran. However, the fact that an ancient and credible country like Greece was influenced by the irresponsible demands of Zionist rulers and their equally evil western backers, will harm Greece on the regional and international scenes.
The free world and international public opinion obviously expect countries like Greece to have broad vision, strive for peace and security, and contribute to cessation of hostilities as and when they occur. It is regrettable that the elite and political class in Athens allowed Israel to do what it did with inherently crooked intention. The respected people of that country and its great civilization will find it rather difficult to accept this is not so stellar performance of their leaders.
