Five theatrical performances are currently on stage at City Theater Complex.
The complex’ Main Hall is currently staging ’Bijan and Manijeh’. Directed by Mahmoud Azizi, the play is inspired by a tale from Shahnameh (Book of the King), an epic by renowned Persian poet Abolqasem Ferdowsi, Fars News Agency reported.
’Bijan and Manijeh’ will remain on stage until the beginning of the 12th Tehran International Puppet Theater Festival in September.
Noted director Qotbeddin Sadeqi is performing ’Zariran Memory’ at Chaharsou Hall. The performance is a modern adaptation of the first Iranian epic from Parthian era which was later written as a prose during the Sassanid dynasty (224-651 AD).
’Zariran Memory’ narrates the bravery of ’Bastour’, the son of Iranian legendary hero ’Zarir’ during the war between Iran and former Touran (Khorasan region in present-day). It is also inspired by the Shahnameh.
’On Foot’, directed by Davoud Daneshvar, is being performed at Sayeh Hall. The play will soon be replaced with Kourosh Narimani’s ’Plaza Hotel’.
Qashqaei Hall is hosting ’Lost in the Crowd’, co-directed by Saeed Hashempour and Jalal Tajangi.
The complex’s Performance Workshop is presenting ’Bride, Nightmare, Sigh, Bluetooth’ directed by Arash Mirtalebi.

Rezazadeh Biopic Ready for Sept.
A biopic on the life of the world’s four-time and twice Olympic +105kg weightlifting gold medalist Hossein Rezazadeh will be aired on national TV after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in August.
Announcing this, the film’s producer, Hamid Hosseinali told Fars News Agency that the biopic ’Cold as Steel, Warm as Fire’ focuses on Rezazadeh’s personal life.

“Shooting of the sections pertaining to his childhood has been completed in his hometown Ardebil, and next week we will begin filming his warm-ups,“ he said.
The producer noted that the documentary includes interviews with political figures, including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, former President Seyyed Mohammad Khatami and Majilis Speaker Ali Larijani.
“It also includes interviews with the head of Weightlifting Federation as well as Rezazadeh’s Qatari rival Jaber Saeed Salem,“ he said.
Hosseinali added that the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of the Olympics in which he will be competing.
“It will be broadcast on national TV’s Channel 3 in early September,“ he said.
Rezazadeh currently holds world records in weightlifting’s super heavyweight class in the snatch, clean, jerk and total. He became the first Iranian athlete to win two Olympic gold medals.

Prophets’ Stories in Persian
Persian Language and Literature Academy has published the Persian version of the book ’Taj Ul-Qesas’ (epitome of stories) written by Abu Nasr Ibn Mohammad Bokhari featuring stories about messengers.
The two-volume book is published in 1,000 copies with a preface by Seyyed Ali Aal-e Davoud and has 1,031 pages.
According to IRNA, it was written in 475 AH.
Although several other books were compiled earlier in Persian language inspired by the holy Qur’an on the same subject, ’Taj Ul-Qesas’ is unique in its own kind. It can be classified in three chapters dealing with stories about messengers ranging from Adam to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Safvat Music Program Scheduled

Internationally-acclaimed Iranian musician Dariush Safvat will be joined by French music scholar Jean During in a program at Tehran’s Vahdat Hall on July 19.
Safvat, who is to discuss Iranian traditional music at the event, will play improvised pieces on the traditional Iranian instrument ’Setar’.
During, who is proficient in classical Persian music melody system ’Radif’, will also speak at the event.
He is the author of many books on Iranian music, including ’The Spirit of Sounds: The Unique Art of Master Elahi’ and ’The Art of Persian Music’.
Safvat, 80, learnt music under his father Ali Asghar Safvat. He was also among the students of Master Abolhassan Saba. Along with Nur-Ali Borumand, Safvat co-founded the Center for Preservation and Propagation of Iranian Music.
Safvat is best known for his mastery of traditional instruments ’Setar’ and ’Santour’.
The event will be held in cooperation with Farabi Cultural-Artistic Foundation.

12,000 Islamic Manuscripts in Baku

Over 12,000 Iranian-Islamic manuscripts are being maintained at the Institute of Manuscripts of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences in Baku.
According to Fars News Agency, the institute, launched in 1950, boasts a collection of over 40,000 manuscripts, of which 12,000 are handwritten copies of Iranian and Islamic books.
These include copies of Shahnameh (Book of the King)--a masterpiece by renowned Iranian epic poet Abolqasem Ferdowsi, ’Masnavi Manavi’ by renowned Persian mystic and poet Molana Jalaleddin Rumi, as well as anthologies of other great Persian poets Khwaja Shams ud-Din Muhammad Hafez-e Shirazi, Nezami Ganjavi and Khaqani.

Rashidi to Stage Drama

Veteran Iranian actor Davoud Rashidi plans to stage ’-2’ at City Theater’s Main Hall in October.
Speaking to Fars News Agency, Rashidi said that he is currently translating the drama written by a French writer.
He added that he will seek the views of noted playwright Ayyoub Aqakhani to make the play close to the Persian culture.
’-2’ is about two patients who are informed that they will die soon.
Rashidi said he has not yet selected the cast of the play.

IIDCYA Theater Center Opens in Ardebil

The Institute for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults has launched its first provincial puppet theater center in Ardebil province.
The center, covering an area of 600 square meters, has a theater hall with a total seating capacity of 160 as well as a library and a number of classrooms, IIDCYA’s Public Relations Office said in a fax to Iran Daily.
The center, which seeks development of children’s theater, is the second center established by the institute after IIDCYA Theater Center in Tehran’s Laleh Park with a 35-year history.
In addition to artistic and educational activities, the center provides enthusiasts with specialized books on theater.
