’Herodotus Persian Wars’ Translated

Mohammad Baqaei
Prominent Iranian scholar Mohammad Baqaei has recently completed the Persian translation of ’The Persian Wars by Herodotus’ authored by the US scholar Spencer Di Scala.
Di Scala, who is a professor of history at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, has spent 12 years writing the book, which is a critical analysis of Greek historian Herodotus’ ’The Histories’, Mehr News Agency reported.
The book’s Persian rendering, which consists of nine chapters, has been printed by the Yadavaran Publishing Company and will be released this week.
’The Histories’ is a record of Herodotus’ inquiries into the origins of the Greco-Persian wars that occurred in 490 BC and 480-479 BC.
“Since a major part of the book is centered on the Greco-Persian wars, it has constantly been reviewed by Iranian historians and scholars over time,“ Baqaei said.
He added that prominent Iranian literati, including Hassan Khan Pirnia, Ahmad Kasravi, and Seyyed Hassan Taqizadeh, have also written critiques of the book and rejected Herodotus’ views.
“In his book, Di Scala confirms the views of the above-mentioned Iranian scholars by providing enough evidence. He also argues that all Herodotus’ remarks on Darius the Great and Xerxes I are blatant lies and completely tendentious,“ he said.
Baqaei received the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (Pakistan National Medal of Honor) in 2006 for the extensive studies he has carried out on the Muslim scholar Muhammad Iqbal Lahori.

Work Begins for Golden Qur’an
An Iranian artist has begun inscribing on gold the biggest copy of the holy Qur’an, an extraordinary artistic work to be registered in the Guinness World Book of Records.
Mehdifar told Alalam in an interview that the holy Qur’an is a divine light (referring to the glorious nature of the holy Qur’an), adding that gold is also a symbol of light.
He said he has spent eight years of research before starting to inscribe the holy Qur’an on gold.
“Each stage of the inscribing process represents a certain idea. For instance, 114 ruby beads on each page represent the number of the chapters (Suras) of the holy Qur’an,“ he said.
He added that he will use pure 24 karat gold and several other precious stones for his artistic work.
Using visual arts and calligraphy in decorating Qur’anic verses as well as sayings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and religious texts, is rooted in Iranian Islamic arts.

Imam Ali (AS):
The best friend of our Holy Prophet (PBUH) is he who, though not related to him, obeys the orders of Allah and his greatest enemy is the man who, though related to him, disobeys Allah.
