Iranian Cinema Mourns Shakibaei
Afuneral ceremony for the well-known Iranian actor Khosrow Shakibaei was held at Tehran’s Vahdat Hall on Sunday.
At the ceremony, Culture and Islamic Guidance Minister Mohammad Hossein Saffar-Harandi, read out the condolence message from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the actor’s sad death, said Fars news agency.
Part of the message reads as, “Shakibaei was a popular artist and Iranian society will always remember his works.“
“Iranian cinema is indebted to the artist,“ he said after reading the message.
A large number of cinema officials, including deputy culture and Islamic guidance minister for cinematic affairs, Mohammadreza Jafari Jelveh, as well as veteran cineastes Ezzatollah Entezami, Parviz Parastouie, Bahman Farman-Ara, Reza Kianian and Jaleh Olov, also attended the event.
Veteran actor, Iraj Rad, also regretted Shakibaei’s death, and said, “He was a phenomenon in Iranian cinema and we may be waiting for years to find an actor like him.“
Shakibaei, 64, began his activities in 1982 with ’The Red Line’ directed by Masoud Kimiaei. His performance in Dariush Mehrjouie’s ’Hamoun’, a turning point in his career, earned him a Crystal Simorgh (Phoenix) at the Eight Fajr International Film Festival.
The artist was recently awarded at the Second Cinema Critics Festival for his 30 years of artistic activities.
He died due to a heart failure at Tehran’s Parsian Hospital on Friday.

Majidi Honored at Sport Film Fest

Award-winning Iranian director Majid Majidi was honored at the closing ceremony of the Seventh Tehran International Sports Film Festival held on Saturday at Enqelab Sports Complex.
Majidi received the festival’s special award for his promotional video for the 2008 Beijing Olympics entitled ’Colors Fly’, Fars News Agency reported.
Officials, including Iran’s National Olympic Committee Chairman Reza Qarakhanlou, and Head of Iran’s Physical Education Organization Mohammad Aliabadi attended the event.
The five-minute movie, ’Colors Fly’, features a group of children who write good wishes on balloons in the five colors of the Olympics rings. Then the children ride bikes as they release the balloons into the air.
In February, Beijing Oriental Royal International Cultural Exchange Center and the Organizing Committees of the Olympic Games (OCOGs) also paid tribute to Majidi for ’Colors Fly’.
The Seventh Tehran International Sports Film Festival, organized by Iran’s National Olympic and Paralympics Academy, was held from July 13-19.
Some 30 countries, including Afghanistan, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, India and Pakistan, participated in the event.

Leader’s Book Published
In Turkmenistan
For the first time, the book titled “Thoughts on Patience“, written by the Supreme Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, has been released in Turkmenistan.
The book, translated into Turkmen by Maral Batiro, has been published in cooperation with Iran’s Cultural Center in Turkmenistan, said Fars News Agency quoting Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO).
The leader has focused on the notion of patience in the holy Qur’an and narrations.
Iran’s cultural attachˇ in a preface to the book writes, “The leader of the Islamic Revolution is among the leading scholars in the Muslim World whose works reflect his deep thoughts.“
The center plans to release further works by the leader in the future.
Iranian Film to Compete in Locarno
Iranian short film titled ’Bagh Dad Barber’ directed by Masoud Bakhshi is to compete at the 61st Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland.
The 13-minute film on a barber in Baghdad, produced in Arabic by the Center for Documentary and Experimental Cinema, will participate in the ’Leopards of Tomorrow’ competition section during the prestigious film festival, Mehr News Agency reported.
The cast of the film includes Majed Nisi, Hossein Khamseh, Pourya Fallah and Saleh Akbari.
The 61st Locarno International Film Festival will be held on August 6-16.
Tanavoli to Display Works
An exhibition featuring works of the renowned Iranian artist, Parviz Tanavoli, will be held at the Iranian Art Garden-Museum on Tuesday.
According to Mehr News Agency, the exhibit will put on display 52 sculptures and paintings by the artist.
These include ’Man and Bird’, ’Lock’ and ’Telephone’.
Tanavoli’s ’The Wall’ recently fetched $2.84 million at a Dubai art sale.
The nearly two-meter tall bronze sculpture covered in hieroglyphics, was the highlight of Christie’s International auction of modern and contemporary art on April 30.
The exhibit will run until August 3.
Arian Band Performing in Kish
Iran’s pop music band ’Arian’ will perform a series of concerts in Kish Island from July 21 to 26.
The band’s sponsor, Mohsen Rajabpour told Fars News Agency that the concerts will be held as part of programs for a summer festival in Kish Island.
He added that the band will feature recent works at the event.
Rajabpour also regretted that pop groups cannot perform in Tehran due to the lack of suitable halls.
Arian recently released its fourth album which contains a song produced in collaboration with popular Irish musician Chris De Burgh.
The ’With or Without You’ album contains four videos and 14 songs including, ’A Light into Eternity’, which was produced in collaboration with Chris De Burgh.
Kish Summer Festival will run until August 31.
Police Recover Picasso Print
Police recovered a Pablo Picasso print and arrested one person in connection with an armed robbery at Sao Paulo’s Pinacoteca Museum last month.
The print, Picasso’s “The Painter and the Model“ from 1963, was one of four works taken in broad daylight on June 12.
The Spanish artist’s “Minotaur, Drinker and Women“ from 1933 and two works by Brazilian artists are still missing, Reuters reported.
Police found the print with Wesley Teobaldo Barros, who was arrested as he prepared to steal an automated teller machine.
Three others were arrested with Barros, but they were not involved with the art heist, it said.
The artworks, which included the print “Couple“ by Brazilian artist Lasar Segall (1891-1957) and the painting “Women in a Window“ by fellow Brazilian Emiliano Di Cavalcanti (1897-1976), are valued at 1 million reais (314,670 pounds), according to the Sao Paulo state culture secretary.
