German Festival to Honor Hafez, Goethe
Germany plans to hold the West-Eastern Divan Festival in 2009 to commemorate prominent Persian poets Khwaja Shams ud-Din Mohammad Hafez Shirazi and German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
Shiraz, the Iranian city of poets, and the German city Weimar are to host the event in June and August 2009, respectively.
“We intend to hold the festival every year thereafter in both Weimar and the Iranian city,“ explained the event’s artistic director, Klaus Gallas.
He added that talks are already underway with the United Arab Emirates on a venue there in 2010, Mehr News Agency quoted DPA as saying.
“The festival may help avert a “war of civilizations“ by highlighting a shared reverence in the Islamic world and the West for classical poetry and fine arts,“ he said, adding that it seeks to help bridge the gap between European and Islamic culture.
Commenting on the programs, he said they will include concerts, literary readings and art exhibitions.
There will also be public readings of the works of Goethe and Hafez, exhibitions by contemporary artists and concerts of Iranian classical and popular music,“ said Gallas, 66, who has been working on the project for more than a year. Gallas noted that the festival’s title is inspired by the Divan (anthology) of Hafez.
The West-Eastern Divan is also the title of an 1819 collection of poems in a quasi-Persian style by Goethe (1749-1832) who was influenced by Hafez poetry.
Gallas said he had won government encouragement from the German Foreign Ministry, the Goethe Institute which promotes German culture abroad, the Federal Culture Fund which promotes culture within Germany and the municipality of Weimar.
