Tourism Expo Honors Ali Hatami
The late Iranian cinema director Ali Hatami was posthumously honored at the closing ceremony of the First Festival of the Exemplary Figures of Iranian Tourism Industry on Tuesday.
According to IRNA, tributes were paid to Hatami for portraying a comely image of Iranian history and culture in his films.
Esfandiar Rahim-Mashaei, head of Iran Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization honored the late filmmaker and presented his wife Zahra Hatami a plaque of honor.
Hatami’s films, including ’The Nightingle’ and ’Mother’ portray symbols of indigenous and national identity of Iran.
The festival was held at Interior Ministry’s Grand Auditorium from October 5-7.
Invitation Warmly Received
The film ’Invitation’ directed by veteran Iranian filmmaker Ebrahim Hatamikia earned over 1.5 billion rials in box-office sales during 10 days of screening.
’Invitation’ is a social film different from previous works of Hatamikia, who mainly focuses on the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war (Sacred Defense), Mehr News Agency said.
The cast of the film includes Mahnaz Afshar, Katayoun Riahi and Gohar Kheirandish.
Other films on screen include ’Canaan’ by Mani Haqiqi, ’Three Women’ by Manijeh Hekmat and ’The Song of Sparrows’ by Majid Majidi.
They all ranked after ’Invitation’ in box-office sales.
Farahani Illustrations on Show
An exhibition of illustrations by the internationally acclaimed Iranian illustrator Hadi Farahani is underway in Tehran.
The exhibit titled ’Between the Lines’ displays Farahani’s journalistic illustrations, which have been printed in numerous international publications, Presstv reported.
This is the first time his works are being showcased in Iran. Hadi Farahani’s illustrations and cartoons have appeared in over 60 international publications.
The Wall Street Journal, International Herald Tribune, The New York Times, The New York Sun and The Los Angeles Times feature his illustrations on a regular basis.
Farahani has been three times nominated for best magazine and newspaper illustrator of the year by The National Cartoonists’ Society in the US.
Three Women Bound for Argentina
Iranian film ’Three Women’, directed by Manijeh Hekmat, will be screened at the 2008 San Luis Cine International Festival in Argentina.
The film will participate in the event’s competition section, Mehr News Agency reported.
’Three Women’ recounts the life story of three generations of Tehrani women, a daughter, her mother and her grandmother.
Hekmat maintains that her movie focuses on different social strata, age groups as well as rural and urban life in Iran.
She has made use of hand-woven carpet as a symbol of national identity.
The 94-minute film has been screened at numerous international film festivals, including the 2008 Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF) in Australia.
’Three Women’ is currently on screen in Tehran.
The second edition of San Luis Cine International Festival will be held from October 31 until November 8.
Iceland Awards Snow
The film ’Snow’, directed by Bosnian filmmaker Aida Begic, has won the Church of Iceland Award of the 5th Reykjavik International Film Festival.
A joint production of Iran, Germany, France and Bosnia, the film participated in the event’s New Vision category, Presstv said.
The post-war Bosnian drama relates the story of widowed women living in 1997 post-war Bosnia, who fight for their freedom and survival.
The feature-length film has been chosen to represent Bosnia at the foreign film section of the 81st Oscar Awards.
The 5th Reykjavik International Film Festival (RIFF) was held from September 25 to October 5 in the Icelandic capital.
