Iran B-Ballers Claim West Asia Title
Iran’s national basketball team has won the 2013 West Asian Basketball Association (WABA) Championship with a win against Lebanon.
The Iranian b-ballers defeated the Lebanese side 100-86 in a match played in the 3, 000-seat Azadi Basketball Hall in west Tehran on Saturday, Press TV wrote.
Iran overpowered Jordan 99-55 in its first game on February 7.
The Iranian basketball players got their second victory a day later when they trounced Iraq 94-61.
The 2013 WABA tournament opened on February 7 and wrapped up on February 9.
Teams from Iran, Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon competed in the tourney.
The 2013 WABA Championship was the qualifying tournament for the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship. The two best teams excluding Iran--which were Lebanon and Jordan--qualified for the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship.
Iran had already gained a berth in the Asian championship.
The 2013 FIBA Asia Championship will be held from August 1 to 11 in Manila.
The competition serves as the qualifying tournament for the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.
Esteqlal Wins, Persepolis Draws
Popular club Persepolis finished 1-1 against Naft in the 25th round of Iran’s Premier League (IPL).
According to Mehr News Agency, the capital-based club met its rival at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium.
Just a minute into the kick off Naft scored the opener thanked to Mostafa Seifi before Vlatko Grozdanoski tied the match in the 18th minute of the game.
In the second half, Yahya Golmohamamdi poured in Gholam Reza Rezaei and Hadi Norouzi to gain the whole points of game but the efforts were in vain.
Thanks to the draw Persepolis with 32 points is 11th in the 18-team league table while Naft with 40 points is 5th.
In the other game, Esteqlal edged out Rah Ahan with Farhad Majidi sole goal on Friday.
With many of the leaders’ top players coming back from Iran’s thumping 5-0 midweek win over Lebanon in the AFC Asian Cup 2015 qualifiers, it took 70 minutes for Majidi to break the deadlock, Afc.com wrote.
All the frontrunners tasted wins on Friday but Esteqlal, who were three points clear on the top of the table before the match, still remain at the same position with 49 points from 25 matches. Fellow ACL playing Iranian debutants Tractorsazi are second while champion Sepahan is at the fourth position behind Foolad with 44 points.
Tehran giant Esteqlal will travel to Qatar to face Al Rayyan in their opening match of the ACL 2013 on 27 February 2013. Also featuring in Group D are UAE’s reigning league champions Al Ain and Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal.
Raikkonen Ends First Test of 2013 on Top
Kimi Raikkonen topped the final day of Formula 1’s first pre-season test of 2013 at Jerez.
The Finn set the best time of the day on a short run with the soft tire during the afternoon running, which was extended by 30 minutes to make up for a delay caused by track repairs around lunchtime.
Raikkonen had attacked the run from the moment he left the pits, choosing to force a way past the Caterham of Charles Pic on his out lap rather than back off to get clear track, AutoSport reported.
After the short, but clearly committed run, the 2007 world champion switched back to longer runs.
Raikkonen’s lap was just enough to prevent Force India hopeful Jules Bianchi from leading the way as he bids to earn a promotion to a race seat with the Silverstone-based team.
Bianchi’s lap, which came just after the track re-opened following the long stoppage in the middle of the day, also came on soft tires.
The Ferrari junior had no chance to respond to Raikkonen’s lap, as he handed the Force India back to lead driver Paul di Resta for the final two hours.
World champion Sebastian Vettel was third fastest for Red Bull on a day where he focused on long runs with the medium and hard tires.
Sauber’s Esteban Gutierrez managed to go fourth with a short run, but he spent most of his afternoon getting used to how the Pirelli tires behave on longer stints.
A series of short runs on the soft tire helped Jean-Eric Vergne move up to fifth late in the day, moving him ahead of Lewis Hamilton.
The Briton had a much better second day with his new team, making up for his lack of running on Wednesday due to a crash by logging the most laps of anyone.
New Ferrari development driver Pedro de la Rosa got back out in the afternoon after a gearbox problem stopped the F138 in the morning. The Spaniard completed 50 laps.
Nadal Eases Into Chile Open Final
Rafael Nadal continued his return from injury by reaching the final of the Chile Open with a 6-2 6-2 win over Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.
The 26-year-old former world number one, sidelined for seven months by knee trouble, needed only 64 minutes to dispatch third seed Chardy, BBC wrote.
In the final of the clay court event in Vina del Mar, he will play world number 73 Horacio Zeballos.
The Argentine beat compatriot Carlos Berlocq, seeded eight, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
Nadal, who had beaten fellow Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-1 6-4 to reach the semi-finals, took the first set in little more than half an hour against Chardy, moving his opponent wide with a deep ball to the corner then blasting an overhead winner into the open court.
He broke to love in the third game of the second set, then saved three break points in the sixth game on the one occasion he was put under pressure.
“I played well today, better than the days before, which is important,” Nadal said. “I won’t compare myself to seven months ago--it’s just the first week of competition. It’s a great feeling to be in a final match after so much time without playing.
“Tomorrow, it will be a tough match against Horacio, who is playing great tennis. I hope to keep enjoying myself like I’ve been doing during this tournament and that my physical condition remains good.”
Zeballos has beaten three seeded opponents en route to his second ATP final, having previously finished runner-up in St Petersburg in 2009.
Nadal and Zeballos have met once, Nadal winning in straight sets at Roland Garros in 2010, one of the seven French Open titles among his 11 Grand Slam triumphs.
Nadal is playing in his first tournament since a shock second-round exit at Wimbledon to Czech journeyman Lukas Rosol in June.
A torn tendon and inflammation in his left knee kept him out of the London Olympics and the 2012 US Open, while a virus delayed his intended return at the Australian Open last month.
The Spaniard plans to compete on clay in Brazil and Mexico before playing ATP Masters hard-court events at Indian Wells and Miami and then heading to Europe for clay events in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Rome culminating in the defense of his French Open title.
Marion, Mavericks Down Slumping Warriors
Dallas didn’t have to worry about another close finish against the weary Golden State Warriors.
Shawn Marion scored a season-high 26 points, O.J. Mayo added 19 and the Mavericks handed the Golden State Warriors their fourth straight loss, 116-91 on Saturday night, AP wrote.
Dallas had lost its first two meetings to Golden State by a combined seven points. The Warriors beat the Mavericks 105-101 in overtime on Nov. 19 and edged Dallas 100-97 on Jan. 31. The narrow loss last week was still on Dallas’ mind, especially since coach Rick Carlisle was fined $25,000 for criticizing the late-game officiating.
Darren Collison, who had 18 points and eight assists, keyed a 21-6 first-quarter run. The Mavericks stretched the lead to 27 in the second quarter and were barely threatened after that.
‘’We were right in the game against Golden State when we played them at their place a week ago,’’ Collison said. ‘’I think everybody was upset about that game. We knew had to go at them in the first five minutes.’’
Marion went 11 of 16 from the floor and grabbed 11 rebounds. Dirk Nowitzki chipped in with 15 points for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks, five games behind eighth-place Houston in the Western Conference, improved to 2-0 on a five-game home stand.
Dallas took advantage of a tired Golden State team which was playing its fourth game in five days.
‘’Any time a team comes in playing four games in five nights, you want to attack them at both ends of the floor,’’ Nowitzki said. ‘’That was a big emphasis for us.’’
Golden State’s Stephen Curry had 18 points on 8-of-23 shooting and Carl Landry added 13. The Warriors were winless on a four-game road trip that started with a 140-109 loss to Houston on Tuesday night.
The Warriors were outscored by an average of nearly 21 points on their four-game trip.
Al-Shabab Beats Saba In Penalty Shoot Outs
The Emirati football club Al-Shabab Al-Arabi has booked a berth in the Group Stages of the 2013 AFC Champions League after overcoming Iranian team Saba Qom.
Iman Razaghi-Rad opened the scoring for the hosts only six minutes into the game played at the Yadegar-e Imam Stadium in Qom, situated 156 kilometers (97 miles) southwest of the Iranian capital of Tehran, on Saturday, Press TV wrote.
In the 17th minute, a shot by Al-Shabab Al-Arabi striker Jociel Ferreira da Silva flew wide of the right post of the opponents’ goal. Milad Nouri squandered a scoring opportunity to double Saba’s lead a minute later when he failed to net from inside the box.
Saba had another chance in the 36th minute, when Nouri hit the bar from a free kick.
Esam bin Salmin converted Al-Shabab Al-Arabi’s only serious chance in the 90th minute to take the match into extra time, where neither side succeeded to score.
In the end, Al-Shabab Al-Arabi won the match in the penalty shootout and reached the Group Stages of the AFC Champions League.
Al-Shabab Al-Arabi will now play in Group B of the AFC Champions League alongside Qatar’s Lekhwiya, Al Ettifaq of Saudi Arabia and Uzbek club Pakhtakor.
Bolt, Blake Open Season in 400m
Olympic champions Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake opened their 2013 seasons by taking part in 400m races in Jamaica.
Both were competing for the Racers Track Club at the Camperdown Classic outdoor meeting at the National Stadium in Kingston, BBC wrote.
Bolt overtook Allodin Fothergill in the finishing straight to win his heat in a time of 46.74 seconds--way off Michael Johnson’s world record of 43.18secs.
Blake was second in his heat in 46.64, behind training partner Warren Weir.
Weir’s was the fastest time of the night--46.23 seconds.
There was no final for the event, which was part of a meeting that attracted around 30 athletes.
“I felt a bit nervous,” said 100m and 200m world record-holder Bolt.
“I just came out here to win and I’m glad I won injury free.”
Blake said: “I’m happy with the run, despite the time. I’m just looking forward to the rest of the season.”
Mancini Angry With Man City Players
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini said his side have a “10% chance” of retaining the Premier League title and said their defeat to Southampton was their worst performance in three years.
City remain nine points behind leaders Manchester United, who can extend their lead against Everton, BBC reported.
And Mancini believes a United win will all but end City’s title challenge.
Asked if City could still win the title, he said, “We have a 10% chance: 12 points is too much at this moment.”
Mancini’s side fell behind to Jason Puncheon’s early goal before Steven Davis made it 2-0 midway through the half.
And although Edin Dzeko pulled one back against the run of play, Saints restored their two-goal advantage shortly after the break with Gareth Barry turning the ball into his own net.
It was no more than Saints deserved against a desperately disappointing City side who Mancini admitted had performed badly.
“It was worse than poor,” said the Italian. “We didn’t play, it was 11 against two so it’s difficult.
“I think this is the worst game in the last two or three years.
“The players played really bad--without strength, without personality. We conceded a goal that I have never seen in my life.
“I was really disappointed with my players today. When we perform like today I’m very angry. The players were away on international duty--that’s not an excuse, but it is a reason.
“Some of our players came back on Friday and we played today. This made it difficult. In the end we played badly.”
City were missing Carlos Tevez, who Mancini said was absent because of personal reasons but he expects to have him back for the FA Cup fifth-round tie with Leeds United next weekend.
Mancini was also critical of keeper Joe Hart, whose mistake allowed Steve Davis to put Southampton 2-0 up.
“It was a really bad mistake,” admitted Mancini.
“But this is not strange. He has made two or three mistakes this year and this is not good for us.”
He added, “We need to work more. Because we won last year, we think we are top players but to be top players you have to work.
“It’ll be very difficult to win the league. I used to always be optimistic and want to be in this moment, but it’s difficult.”
Benitez In Dark Over Lampard’s Future
Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez was unable to shed any fresh light on Frank Lampard’s future after the midfielder scored his 12th goal of the season.
