Iranian Female Skiers to Compete In Alpine World Ski Event
National Iranian women’s skiing team is going to take part in the 2013 Alpine World Ski Championships in Austria.
The Iranian outfit, consisting of Mitra Kalhor, Ziba Kalhor, Marjan Kalhor and Fatemeh Kia-Darbandsari, will leave Tehran for Vienna on Tuesday to compete in various women’s events of the tournament, including Downhill and Slalom, Press TV wrote.
The 2013 Alpine World Ski Championships opened in the southeastern Austrian town of Schladming on February 4, and will wrap up on February 17.
A total 609 athletes from 70 countries are competing in the sports event. Malta is making its debut.
Vonn Successful Knee Injury
Also, American Lindsey Vonn has had her knee repaired after shredding two ligaments in a crash at Schladming last week.
The US Ski Team confirmed that the operation was a success, while Dr William Sterett, who performed the surgery, is optimistic that the 28-year-old can make a full recovery.
“She will do everything in her power to return as quickly as possible to competitive skiing,” Sterett said.
Vonn’s season was ended by the horror crash during the women’s Super-G race at the World Championships in Schladming.
She is aiming to defend her Olympic gold medal in downhill in next year’s Games at Sochi.
Third African Soccer Title for Nigeria
Nigeria’s long wait for a major soccer title ended on Sunday as the “Super Eagles” beat Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Sunday Mba scored his second goal of the two-week tournament--both coincidentally coming on the day that bears his name--as Nigeria became just the fourth team to win the continental crown three times or more, CNN wrote.
“I’m so happy it is a dream come true. I don’t know what to say,” Mba said after the final whistle.
“We really worked hard and we were looking forward to this day and I’m so happy for this.”
Stephen Keshi became only the second man to win the title as both coach and player, having been captain at the 1994 tournament when Nigeria won for the second time--though he did not play in that final.
Burkina Faso, playing in the final for the first time, missed out on the $1.5 million first prize and the chance to represent Africa at this year’s Confederations Cup in Brazil.
Mba also scored in the quarterfinal win over tournament favorites Ivory Coast, being one of five home-based players brought into the squad by Keshi.
Keshi made big changes after Nigeria failed to qualify for last year’s event in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon--a turbulent period for the national team, which was suspended from international football by President Goodluck Jonathan before world ruling body FIFA threatened to intervene.
However, the president was delighted with Sunday’s result.
“President Jonathan thanks coach Stephen Keshi and all members of the team who have worked very hard to make Nigeria the proud champions of Africa once again after 19 years of setbacks in the competition,” his office said in a statement.
“The President also believes that having conquered Africa, the new Super Eagles can go on to achieve even greater glory at the World Cup in Brazil next year.”
Back in 1994, Nigeria was ranked fifth in the world--the highest by any African nation.
The Super Eagles won gold at the 1996 Olympics, but have since slipped to 52nd in the rankings.
Mba’s 40th-minute strike came after a moment of opportunistic skill as the 24-year-old flicked a loose ball into the penalty area and then poked a volley past the Stallions’ goalkeeper Daouda Diakite.
“It will go a long way towards my career,” said Mba, who made his first appearance at the tournament after winning a late call-up from Keshi.
“This is my first time and I’m very happy. We gave all that we had.”
Mercedes Impressed by Hamilton Attitude
Lewis Hamilton has already proven to Mercedes that he has the off-track skills and attitude to match his obvious speed, says team boss Ross Brawn.
At the end of his first week of track action with Mercedes during testing at Jerez in Spain, Brawn said that Hamilton had impressed not only with his performance in the car but in how he was approaching the task of moving Mercedes forward, AutoSport wrote.
“He is clearly a very talented driver,” said Brawn. “But F1 is about so much more. There are a lot of highly talented drivers who do not have the rest of it.
“I think he has the rest of it as well.”
Brawn said that Hamilton’s attitude to working with Mercedes had been a big help, especially the way he was dealing methodically with the situation, and leaving no stone unturned.
“He is very straightforward I have to say,” explained Brawn. “In many ways he is very simple, very straightforward. He tells us what he thinks.
“He is never short of detail in telling you what he thinks and, of course, you learn at what level you need to go to. He is interested in everything about the car. He is interested in the fact that the stickers might not be put properly on the bodywork.
“He has a very good eye for detail, so I think he will be a very involved member of the team, which is what we wanted.”
Brawn did think, however, that it would take some time for Hamilton and the engineering team to become as integrated as they will need to be to ensure car development is always in the right direction.
“I think it is still very early in terms of understanding what he wants from a car perspective. We need a greater spread before we get to understand that bit, but he is clearly a person who enjoys being involved at all levels.
“That is a great motivation for the team. He has been working hard with the engineers at this test. He has been here on the days that Nico [Rosberg] has been driving, listening on the headset to what has been going on. So, he is everything I hoped he would be.”
Brawn also revealed that he had made it clear to Hamilton that it was vital the former world champion spoke his mind to ensure that he could help the team improve.
Heat Top Lakers
LeBron James ran a few steps behind the play, knowing exactly what was
coming. The lob from Norris Cole arrived, and the NBA’s reigning MVP rose for a catch and dunk. He made it look easy.
He’s making everything look easy right now, AP wrote.
James scored 32 points on 12-for-18 shooting in a record-setting show, Dwyane Wade scored 30 and the Miami Heat beat the Los Angeles Lakers 107-97 on Sunday for their fifth straight win.
It was James’ fifth straight game with at least 30 points, a franchise record. He also joined Adrian Dantley (1979) and Moses Malone (1982) as the only NBA players to score at least 30 and shoot at least 60 percent in five straight outings, the team said. ‘’Don’t take it for granted,’’ Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. ‘’He’s making greatness look easy.’’
Mario Chalmers scored 13 and Chris Bosh finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Heat.
Kobe Bryant had 28 points and nine assists for the Lakers, who also got 18 points from Earl Clark. The Lakers had eight turnovers in the fourth quarter, while Miami had none.
‘’Turnovers,’’ lamented Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni. ‘’You have to give them credit. They’re good.’’
With the win, Miami moved 2 1/2 games clear of the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference standings. The Knicks lost to the Los Angeles Clippers earlier Sunday.
Dwight Howard and Steve Nash each scored 15 for the Lakers.
‘’They have a couple of sensational players over there that made some big plays,’’ Bryant said.
Indeed, James and Wade stole the show down the stretch.
Wade also shot 12 for 18 for Miami, which shot 55 percent as a team and held a 38-29 edge in rebounding. James scored 20 in the second half and Wade had 18 in the final two quarters, but the defending NBA champions weren’t able to pull away until the final minutes.
Wade had five straight points for Miami, the last of them coming with 7:15 left when his three-point play put the Heat up 89-82--at that point, their biggest lead of the day.
A minute later, Wade started what might have been Miami’s signature sequence of the game.
He stepped in front of a pass by Bryant under the basket, then flipped it to Bosh before falling out of bounds.
Santos to Leave Arsenal on Loan
Arsenal left-back Andre Santos has travelled to Brazil to finalize details on a loan move to Gremio until end of season.
Santos has made 13 league starts since arriving from Turkish side Fenerbahce in a £6.2m move in August 2011, BBC wrote.
His imminent exit has restricted Arsene Wenger’s left-back options as Kieran Gibbs has been ruled out for another four to six weeks.
Recent signing Nacho Monreal, 26, is cup-tied for the Champions League.
However, Thomas Vermaelen, who missed Saturday’s 1-0 win at Sunderland with an ankle problem, is close returning and can play at left-back.
And another option is 20-year-old Spaniard Ignasi Miquel, who has made just one league start for Arsenal.
Brazil international Santos has struggled to adapt to the Premier League and upset Arsenal fans when he took the bizarre decision to ask former Gunners striker Robin van Persie to swap shirts at half-time during the 2-1 defeat at Manchester United on 3 November.
Santos has fallen further down the pecking order since Monreal’s £8.5m arrival from Malaga at the end of January and is surplus to requirements, despite the absence of Gibbs and Vermaelen.
Monreal will not be able to play in Arsenal’s Champions League round of 16 tie with Bayern Munich later this month after representing Malaga in this season’s competition.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jack Wilshere should be fine for next weekend’s FA Cup tie against Blackburn after receiving a kick on his thigh at Sunderland.
Laurent Koscielny has a calf strain but could be in contention for the weekend. If he does miss out, he is expected to be fit for the Champions League last-16 tie against Bayern Munich next Tuesday.
Real-United Tie Is One ‘The World Wants
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho says Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Manchester United is the match “the world is waiting for”.
Madrid warmed up for the last-16 tie in style, by beating Sevilla 4-1 thanks to a hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo, BBC wrote.
“People think we are under pressure because a big team will be out,” said Mourinho, who was at Old Trafford for United’s win over Everton on Sunday.
“But the people are not waiting for any other game.”
The last-16 first-leg tie at the Bernabeu will be the first time Ronaldo has faced his former club since making a record £80m move to Spain in 2009.
Ronaldo’s hat-trick on Saturday--his 20th for Real--began with a left-footed strike following a mesmerizing step-over.
After pouncing on a mistake from visiting defender Federico Fazio to make it 3-0, he then launched a rapid counter-attack with a 50-yard run that ended with him tapping in a Gonzalo Higuain pass from close range.
Ronaldo’s evening ended early with a standing ovation from the crowd, leaving him fresh for the game against a Manchester United side in good form and on the back of a win over Everton that put them 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League.
Nadal Beaten in Chile Open Final
Rafael Nadal was denied the Chile Open title on his comeback from injury as Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos came from a set down to beat him in the final.
Zeballos, ranked 73rd in the world, won his first ATP Tour title with a shock 6-7 (2-7) 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 victory at the clay-court event in Vina del Mar, BBC wrote.
Former world number one Nadal, 26, was playing his first tournament after eight months out with knee trouble.
“It’s true I wanted to win the final but it wasn’t possible,” he said.
Zeballos did not progress beyond the second round in any of the tour-level events he competed in last year, but had already beaten three seeds en route to his match against Nadal.
“It’s a dream for me,” the 27-year-old told the ATP Tour’s official website.
“To be able to play a final against Nadal was already good enough for me. It’s a moment that will stay in my memory for the rest of my life.”
Before this week, Nadal had not played a competitive match since suffering a shock second-round defeat by Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon last year.
Having suffered with a knee injury, the world number five pulled out of January’s Australian Open with a stomach virus.
The Spaniard saved two break points on his opening service game and looked to be on course for victory after wrapping up the first set in a tie-break.
But Zeballos refused to buckle and took the second set after another tight tie-break.
There had been no breaks of serve up to that point, but Nadal changed that by winning the opening game of the third set - only to relinquish his advantage immediately.
At 5-4 ahead, Zeballos made his move and charged into a 0-40 lead on Nadal’s serve before converting his first match point and sealing victory after two hours and 46 minutes.
Beckham Debut
David Beckham is likely to feature in the Paris St Germain squad for the first time when the Ligue 1 leaders take on arch rivals Olympique Marseille on Feb. 24, coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Monday.
