Iran, Argentina Move To Settle AMIA Case
Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said on Sunday that Tehran and Buenos Aires are working together to settle the accusations about AMIA explosion dating back to 1994.
Speaking to IRNA, he said Iran has condemned the terrorist attack on an Argentine Jewish center in 1994 and is working with the Argentine government to resolve the issue in line with a letter of understanding signed by representatives of the two governments.
He said that based on the agreement signed by Iran and Argentinean government, International Police (Interpol) must quit issuing red notice for four Iranian officials.
Elaborating on Foreign Ministry’s efforts to lead Iranian diplomatic relations to warmer interaction with other governments, he expressed the hope that the new Iranian year will be a turning point for Iran’s foreign policy.
“The ill-wishers tried to imply that Iran has been isolated and will suffer a setback in diplomatic domain,” he said.
He referred to construction of Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline and said the project started at a time when Iran is under economic sanctions but Iran has other big projects to implement.
On January 27 Salehi and his Argentinean counterpart, Hector Timerman, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to shed light on the AMIA (Asociacion Mutual Israelita Argentina) bombing in Buenos Aires which left 85 people dead.
Argentina’s Senate on February 21 gave the green light to the agreement with Iran on the AMIA case with the senators voting 39-31 in favor of the MoU.
Argentinean lawmakers later signed the agreement into law after a 14-hour session with 131 ayes against 113 nays.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said the agreement between Iran and Argentina has been submitted to the Majlis for approval.
16 Tons of Drugs Confiscated In Khorasan
Police Commander of Khorasan Razavi province Bahman Amiri Moqaddam said on Sunday that 16 tons of drugs have been confiscated in the province since March 21, 2012.
Amiri Moqaddam said 14 tons of the illicit drugs were seized across the province and another two tons on border areas during 157 operations, IRNA reported.
He also said that more than 900 addicts were arrested and handed over to rehabilitation centers.
Iran has a 900-kilometer border with Afghanistan which has frequently been used as the main conduit for smuggling of Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.
Iran has spent more than $700 million to seal the borders and prevent the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab, and Central Asian countries.
The war on drug trade originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers over the past 33 years.
Earlier executive director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said Iran is the international body’s ‘number one partner’.
“In the war on drugs, Iran is the number one partner of the United Nations,” Yury Fedotov noted.
Ashton for P5+1 Resolve...

Iran and the P5+1 group have held several rounds of talks with the main focus on Iran’s nuclear energy program.
Before their last meeting in Almaty, the two sides had met in the Russian capital city of Moscow, in June 2012.
In an interview with Austrian broadcaster ORF on March 1, Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi also described the latest round of the talks as a ‘milestone’ and a ‘turning point in the negotiations’.
The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, with United States and EU using this pretext to impose several rounds of illegal unilateral sanctions against Tehran.
Tehran rejects the allegation, maintaining that as a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) on nuclear weapons and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes.
Navy Launches Jamaran 2...

Tehran has repeatedly assured other countries that its military might poses no threat to other states, insisting that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.
Regional Security
During the launch ceremony, President Ahmadinejad said Iran’s military and scientific achievements are in line with guaranteeing regional security.
“I am sure that all Caspian Sea littoral states are happy about the Iranian nation’s progress and regard it a step toward guaranteeing their own security,” Ahmadinejad said.
The president pointed out that Iran’s policy is to boost friendly ties with other nations.
Ahmadinejad further praised Iranian experts for building the new destroyer and said their efforts are indicative of high spirit of self-belief.
He also said a nation can secure its stability and achieve dignity when it stands on its own feet.
Meanwhile, addressing the ceremony, Vahidi said ‘Jamaran 2’ has been built to help the navy in a wide range of missions.
“Jamaran 2 destroyer has been built with the purpose of safeguarding the Islamic Republic of Iran’s sea borders and supporting missions in combat against human, goods and narcotics trafficking in the northern parts of the country,” Brigadier General Vahidi said, addressing the ceremony on Sunday.
No Interest Sections Agreement With Canada
An Iranian diplomat on Sunday ruled out rumors that an agreement had been reached with Canada on opening interest sections between the two countries.
Deputy Foreign Minister for consular, parliamentary and Iranian expatriates affairs Hassan Qashqavi said no understanding has been reached with the Canadian government in this respect.
In September 2012, Ottawa shut its embassy in Tehran and ordered Iranian diplomats to leave Canada within five days. The Canadian government also froze bank accounts of many Iranian nationals living in Canada and banned money transfers to Iran.
Iran slammed Canada’s unilateral decision to sever ties with Tehran calling it a ‘non-professional, unconventional and unjustifiable’ move.
Qashqavi further stated that talks are underway with London to resume consular activities.
He said Iran has reached an agreement with the British government to assign Swedish Embassy in Tehran to represent British interests and Omani Embassy in London to look after Iranian interests in Britain but no such agreement has been reached with Canada yet.
British Foreign Minister William Hague withdrew British diplomatic staff from Iran in late November 2011, following a protest outside the UK Embassy in Tehran.
On November 27, Iranian lawmakers voted to downgrade diplomatic ties with Britain.
The move came in response to Britain’s decision to impose sanctions on the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran, over the false allegation that Tehran’s nuclear program may include a covert military aspect.
Pakistani PM Defends IP Gasline
Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Saturday defended Iran gas pipeline and said that the project will meet the country’s energy needs.
In his farewell address to the nation over Radio Pakistan and Pakistan Television networks, he defended his government’s foreign policy noting that relations were improved with India and Afghanistan, IRNA reported.
He said Pakistan signed the multi-billion Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project to resolve the energy crisis. He said Pakistan faced with isolation but his government revived the credibility of Pakistan through aggressive policies.
The 1,600-kilometer pipeline, projected to cost $1.2-1.5 billion, would enable the export of 21.5 million cubic meters of Iranian natural gas to Pakistan on a daily basis.
The ground-breaking ceremony of Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project was held last Monday in southeast of Iran in a ceremony attended by the two countries’ presidents.
The project, known as ‘Peace Pipeline’, started with Iran’s 500-million-dollar investment.
Once the IP gas pipeline is operational, the ground will be prepared for economic boom in southeast Iran.
Despite strong opposition from the US, Pakistani President Asef Ali Zardari said earlier that his energy-starved country would pursue the gas pipeline project and would persuade the critics that Pakistan needs energy.
Pakistan and Iran have held talks on the project for nearly two decades, but it was finalized during Zardari’s recent visit to Tehran.
Iran has already constructed more than 900 kilometers of the pipeline on its territory.
Tehran-based Tadbir Energy Development Group will reportedly undertake all engineering procurement and construction work for the first segment of the project, which starts from the Iran-Pakistan border and costs around $250 million.
Syria Dispute Shouldn’t Affect...

All countries will never reach a consensus on all international developments, since that would run contrary to human nature, but such differences should not undermine friendly relations, he observed.
Negotiations, consultations, meetings and dialog should be held when disagreements arise so the parties involved can express their views and explain the rationale behind their opinions and then arrive at the best solution, Mehmanparast said.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 and tens of thousands of people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the turmoil.
The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.
Damascus blames western countries and some of their regional allies including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey of arming the opposition and fueling the crisis in the country, as reports indicate that a large number of insurgents fighting the Syrian government are foreign nationals.
Several international human rights organizations have accused the foreign-sponsored insurgents of committing war crimes.
Iran has repeatedly rejected foreign intervention in Syria’s internal affairs, calling for national dialog as the only way out of the country’s prolonged impasse.
In a key speech in January, the Syrian president stated that Damascus was always ready to hold talks with the opposition and political parties and that he would call for a ‘comprehensive national dialog’ after the terrorist activities stopped in the country.
The Syrian president also urged ‘concerned states and parties’ to stop funding, arming and harboring militants.
Harming Iran-Latam Ties
Mehmanparast also said Israel uses the case of 1994 AMIA Jewish center bombing in the Argentinean capital, Buenos Aires, to obstruct the development of relations between Iran and Latin American states.
“Iran has been charged of being connected with the AMIA incident by a regime which pursues state terrorism. The Zionist regime [of Israel] has been trying hard to disrupt Iran’s regular activities within Latin American countries under the pretext of AMIA bombing incident,” the spokesman said.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman added that the Israeli regime has been trying to falsely accuse the Islamic Republic of being involved in terrorist activities despite the fact that the Iranian nation is the biggest victim of terrorism and has always made every effort to eliminate this sinister phenomenon.
“The Zionist regime [of Israel] is still one of the biggest threats to security and stability in all regions including Latin America and this illegitimate regime should not be allowed to negatively impact relations between Iran and Latin American countries,” Mehmanparast noted.
He also pointed to the recent agreement between Iran and Argentina to set up an international truth commission to investigate the AMIA incident, saying that for the first time efforts are being made to shed light on the truth behind the AMIA incident.
On January 27, Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and his Argentinean counterpart, Hector Timerman, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to shed light on the AMIA bombing in Buenos Aires which left 85 people dead. AMIA stands for the Asociacion Mutual Israelita Argentina or the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association.
Argentina’s Senate on February 21 gave the green light to the agreement with Iran on the AMIA case with the senators voting 39-31 in favor of the MoU. Argentinean lawmakers later signed the agreement into law after a 14-hour session with 131 ayes against 113 nays.
Argentinean President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and Timerman have also endorsed the agreement, which stipulates that the fact-finding commission, composed of five foreign legal experts, should issue a report after carrying out an evaluation of Argentina’s investigation into the issue.
Under intense political pressure from the US and Israel, Argentina had formally accused Iran of having carried out the bomb attack. The Islamic Republic has categorically denied any involvement in the terrorist bombing.
Energy-Hungry EU
The spokesman further said the European countries need Iran’s assistance to continue economic growth and development.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran can be a very good economic partner for the European countries,” Mehmanparast noted.
The official added that the Islamic Republic can serve as a long-term energy supply source to the European countries because the country sits on the world’s second largest natural gas and the fourth largest crude oil reserves.
Mehmanparast further stated that member states of the European Union (EU) have great capacities, but they have suffered great losses due to their economic dependence on the crisis-ridden economy of the United States.
“At the moment, we are witnessing social and economic crises in the European countries which have taken some of these countries to the brink of total bankruptcy, and in some other countries the economic crisis has led to major social crises including [record-high] unemployment,” he pointed out.
Europe plunged into financial crisis in early 2008. Insolvency now threatens heavily debt-ridden countries such as Greece, Portugal and Spain.
The worsening debt crisis has forced EU governments to adopt harsh austerity measures and tough economic reforms, which have triggered incidents of social unrest and massive protests in many European countries.
Tremor Jolts Hajiabad
An earthquake measuring 3.7 on Richter scale jolted surrounding areas of Hajiabad in southern province of Hormuzgan on early Sunday.
