India Able to Mediate Iran’s Nuclear Issue
By Davood Baqeri
New Delhi has the potential to mediate between Iran the West to resolve misunderstanding over Tehran’s nuclear issue, said the director general of India’s Institute for Defense Studies and Analyses (IDSA) on Monday.
“Iran’s nuclear issue is very complicated and I am sure many countries are trying to resolve it, but so far it was not possible to do so. Actually as far as India is concerned, I don’t think there is any proposal at this point of time for mediating between Iran and the West.
But there is a potential for mediation (by India),” Arvind Gupta told Iran Daily when asked about India’s help in resolving the impasse over the Islamic Republic’s civilian nuclear drive.
“I feel that there is a potential, but provided both sides agree on that. We have good relations with the West and good relations with Iran and the problems surrounding (the issue) are affecting our security directly,” he said.
He noted that Iran, as a country that signed the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), has stressed for many times that it is not pursuing a military nuclear program.
Iran is in negotiation with P5+1 (China, Russia, France, Britain and the US plus Germany) over its nuclear issue.
No Plan on Hormuz Closure
Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi, on Sunday said the Islamic Republic has no plan to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipment lane in the Persian Gulf, in response to international sanctions.
“These two issues (closure of the Strait of Hormuz and sanctions) are not related and are totally independent of each other,” the minister said.
“The sanctions are unjust, but they have pushed us forward and boosted our capabilities. We are strong enough to leave these sanctions powerfully behind,” Vahidi added.
He noted that tough sanctions imposed against the Islamic Republic have nothing to do with the country’s nuclear energy program, but are economic in nature.
“Sanctions enforced [against Iran] are not aimed at restricting [Iran’s] nuclear [energy] program, but the enemies [of Iran] have chosen economic issues to deal their blow [to the Iranian nation],” he said.
“If we can form the last link in the [chain of] resistance [against western sanctions] by [implementing] the economy of resistance, we will be winners,” Vahidi added.
At the beginning of 2012, the United States and the European Union imposed new sanctions on Iran’s oil and financial sectors with the goal of preventing other countries from purchasing Iranian oil and conducting transactions with the Central Bank of Iran. The sanctions came into force in early summer 2012.
On October 15, the EU foreign ministers reached an agreement on another round of sanctions against Iran.
The illegal US-engineered sanctions are imposed based on the unfounded accusation that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.
Car Bombing Kills 10 Near Damascus
Brahimi, Lavrov Discuss Syria Crisis
A car bomb attack killed at least 10 people in the predominantly Christian and Druze area of Jaramana near Damascus on Monday, Syrian state television said.
“A terrorist car bombing next to a bakery on Rawda Street killed at least 10 people, including women and children,” the television said.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said “the car bomb detonated on a main street in the mainly loyalist suburb of Jaramana, where there is a proliferation of armed pro-regime popular defense committees,” or militias.

Thousands Without Power Due to US Hurricane Sandy
Waves pounded the shores and winds whipped through the trees on Monday as the effects of Hurricane Sandy slowly intensify in Massachusetts and US East Coast. With coastal flooding expected, voluntary evacuations have been ordered in several communities, but as of mid-morning only about 10,000 power outages had been reported.
Hurricane Sandy strengthened as it turned toward the US East Coast on Monday, bringing major cities from New York to Washington to a standstill amid warnings of life-threatening storm surges.
Sandy’s maximum sustained winds intensified to 85 miles per hour (140 kilometers per hour) overnight and at 1200 GMT it’s eye was located 260 miles southeast of the evacuated gambling haven of Atlantic City, New Jersey.
“One of the biggest storms of our lifetimes is unfolding right now,” said anchor Kelly Cass as The Weather Channel began its fourth day of nonstop coverage.
The weather disrupted the US election campaign, with President Barack Obama canceling an appearance in the battleground state of Florida, returning instead to the White House to steer a huge government relief effort.
Americans Refuse To Comply With Int’l Judicial Mechanisms
By Farzaneh Shokri
The Americans tout international judicial mechanisms but refuse to comply with them, a Foreign Ministry official said.
Speaking to Iran Daily, Foreign Ministry’s deputy director general for human rights and women’s affairs, Mostafa A’alayi further said that while in articles 18, 19 and 20 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), clear references have been made to freedom of religion and freedom of speech, ‘we are witnessing violation of freedom of speech in different societies--particularly European and American societies’.
He said currently the convention has over 130 signatories that are obliged to observe certain rights or else they will face questioning by a supervisory committee.
A’alayi noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran is a member of the committee, which reports to international bodies every five years.
“Also, Article 4 of the Convention against Racism upholds the principle of freedom of speech and commits governments to guarantee freedom of speech and media and also freedom of information.”
He said while the United States has signed the convention, it continues to violate it.
