Ferdowsi commemoration opens nationwide

The tenth congress on the Iranian epic poet Abolqassem Ferdowsi will be held in a number of Iranian provinces from May 9-20.

Ferdowsi Foundation and Iran's Pahlavani and Zurkhaneh Sports Federation have organized the event which will be attended by experts on Shahnameh studies and artists.

Acclaimed Iranian vocalist Shahram Nazeri will unveil his latest album titled 'Royal Flag' (Derafshe e Kavyani), which was composed by Farid Elhami, at Ferdowsi Foundation's branch in Ferdowsi's birthplace in Tous, Khorassan Razavi province.

An educational workshop on Ferdowi's magnum opus Shahnameh (Book of Kings) will also be held in Tous by Jalal Khaleqi Motlaq.

Iranian litterateur Mir Jalaleddin Kazzazi will lecture on the renowned Persian poet at Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman on May 9.

Nazeri will perform at Tehran University's Faculty of Literature on May 11. Paintings themed on Shahnameh will also be displayed at the university.

On May 12, a prominent Iranologist Pirouz Mojtahedzadeh will give a lecture at Tehran's Milad Tower. A group of naqqals (Shahnameh reciters) will also hold performances on the same day at Jihad Center of Isfahan University of Technology.

Other programs include recitation of sections of Shahnameh in Markazi province on May 14.

The House of Literati at the ongoing Tehran International Book Fair will hold Shahnameh recitation on May 15.

Shahnameh is an enormous poetic opus created by Ferdowsi around 1000 AD and is the national epic of the Persian-speaking world.

It tells the mythical and historical past of Iran from the creation of the world to the Islamic conquest of Persia in the 7th century AH.
