The individuals, above 50 and still illiterate, will be deprived of certain public services from next year ending March 2017, said the Education Minister Ali Asghar Fani.

The minister noted that illiteracy alleviation is among the main goals of the ministry.

"Illiteracy is the cause of many cultural, social and political problems," he said.

The minister said unlearned people who try to overcome illiteracy and any other person who takes steps to uproot the problem in the country will receive financial incentives.

"Facilities have been created by the ministry to ease unlettered people' access to learning classes such as establishment of boarding schools in rural areas," he added.
