High Water Council approved revision in activities of dams

Vice-President and head of the Department of Environment (DoE) Masoumeh Ebtekar said the High Water Council has approved revision in the activities of dams and their building process, adding that different options will be reviewed in this regard.

Ebtekar further remarked that so far dam building has been considered as the only option for saving and managing water resources and noted that in the High Water Council members reached the conclusion that for saving water combined methods and other mechanisms should be employed which deal less damage on the environment and the nature, IRNA reported.

The High Water Council comprises ministries of energy, agriculture jihad, industry, mine and trade and Management and Planning Organization as well as institutes like the Department of Environment.

She said in some areas there might be the need for building dams but it should be built on scientific and environmentally friendly basis.

The Department of Environment in the past one and a half ears has made outstanding efforts for preventing unprincipled dam building with no environmental evaluation a clear example of which is Shafaroud dam in Gilan Province due to posing a threat on about 300 hectares of Hyrcanian forest.

It is expected that Shafaroud dam, 6 km southwest of Rezvanshahr and 65 km from Rasht on Shafaroud River, becomes the highest dam in the country with a height of 137 meters.

Based on predictions, the aim of building the dam is to provide water to Rezvanshahr and Parehsar cities, providing water for agricultural and industrial purposes, and generating electricity.
