In the second quarter, Iran continued its dominant display as it saw off Uruguay 3-0.
Uruguay had a good start in the third quarter and took a 2-0 lead but Iran made a good comeback and the period finished in a 3-3 draw.
Sirous Taherian’s men defeated Uruguay 5-2 in the fourth quarter.
This is second gold medal in the nation’s history after 41 years. Iran had claimed the gold medal in the 1974 Asian Games in Tehran.
Iran’s Sajjad Abdi was named as the best goalkeeper of the world meet.
The completion’s organizing committee chose the best goalkeeper and goal-scorer at the end of the tournament.
Abdi from Iran was chosen as the best keeper and Mohammad Alrumaidhin from Kuwait was named as the best goal-scorer.
Taherian dedicated the title to the Iranian people and those who supported the team in the competitions.
“First, I want to thank all the fans who came here to support us,” Taherian told the reporters.
“I also thank all players and staff who believed we would win the title,” he added.
“Uruguay was a good team since they had won all their four previous matches,” Taherian said.
His counterpart Jorge Remersaro Matturro in a post-match news conference said, “This tournament was very lucrative for us, we placed fifth and sixth at the previous editions but in this tournament we finished second. This proves we have promoted our level, but Iran showed they are two or more steps above us.” Talking about Iran, he added, “We knew we are going to play against a strong team. We were not lucky enough to have all of players. Three players were not eligible to play due to injury.”
Jorge finally appreciated Iran for high level of organization including hotel, food, transportation and discipline.
