Taherian dedicated the title to the Iranian people and those who supported the team in the competitions.

“First, I want to thank all the fans who came here to support us,” Taherian told the reporters.

“I also thank all players and staff who believed we would win the title,” he added.

“Uruguay was a good team since they had won all their four previous matches,” Taherian said.

His counterpart Jorge Remersaro Matturro in a post-match news conference said, “This tournament was very lucrative for us, we placed fifth and sixth at the previous editions but in this tournament we finished second. This proves we have promoted our level, but Iran showed they are two or more steps above us.” Talking about Iran, he added, “We knew we are going to play against a strong team. We were not lucky enough to have all of players. Three players were not eligible to play due to injury.”

Jorge finally appreciated Iran for high level of organization including hotel, food, transportation and discipline.

Launched in 2007, the FINA Water Polo Development Trophy gathers teams from nations in Africa, the Americas and Asia where it is still not a major sport, seeking to develop water polo on a global level.
