Deputy FM in Saudi Arabia to attend OIC meeting

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian traveled to Saudi Arabia on Monday to attend the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation's emergency meeting on Yemen.

The daylong meeting in the Saudi city of Jeddah comes as peace talks were held in Swiss city of Geneva on Monday between the warring Yemeni factions with the aim of ending months of conflicts in the Arab country, IRNA reported.

Abdollahian will join other officials from the Islamic world today at the extraordinary meeting in Jeddah.

Abdollahian's last visit to Saudi Arabia was on September 2014, when he met former Saudi foreign minister Saud al-Faisal.

The OIC meeting is based on a request by the deposed government of Yemen, the Islamic organization said in a statement, adding that the gathering has the backing of the majority of its member states.

His visit to Riyadh is also the first such high-level trip by an Iranian official since Saudi Arabia started its aggression against Yemen almost three months ago. The attacks, which have been mostly in the form of deadly airstrikes targeting population centers and sensitive infrastructure across Yemen, has claimed more than 2,300 lives, according to the UN. However, Yemeni sources have put the death toll at least 4,300.
