Iran urges major reform in UNSC

Iran’s deputy representative to the United Nations, Gholamhossein Dehqani, criticized the UN Security Council for the failure to undertake its responsibility of maintaining international peace and security.

Addressing the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Dehqani proposed the idea of a holistic reform on five key issues in the UNSC’s function, Tasnim News Agency reported.

The envoy referred to the “expansion of the Security Council” as one of the elements of a necessary overall reform in the global body’s structure.

The session was held for a debate on agenda item 121, entitled “The question of equitable representation on an increase in the membership of the Security Council, and related matters”.
