Iranians mark National Day of Fight against Global Arrogance

Iranians held massive rallies across the country to mark the National Day of Fight against Global Arrogance.

November 4, which falls on 13th day of the Iranian calendar month, Aban (October 23-November 21), is also known as the Student Day in Iran, marking National Day of Fight against Global Arrogance. It also marks the anniversary of the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy in the capital, Tehran.

Chanting “Death to America”, people took to the streets in different cities across the country to mark the event.

On Tuesday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said the slogan "Death to America" is not aimed at the American people, but rather American policies.

He made the comment while meeting with Iranian students on the occasion of the anniversary of the US Embassy takeover.

The Leader said the "aim of the slogan is not death to American people. The slogan means death to US policies and arrogance."

Thirty six years ago on this day, a group of Iranian university students took over the US Embassy, which they believed had turned into a center of espionage aimed at overthrowing the Islamic Republic in Iran following the country’s Islamic Revolution earlier in 1979.

Documents found at the compound later corroborated claims by revolutionary students that the US was using its Tehran Embassy to hatch plots for the overthrow of the nascent Islamic establishment in Iran.

Fifty-two Americans from the embassy were held for 444 days until January 20, 1981.

Founder of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Rouhollah Khomeini later hailed the event as “a second revolution” with a greater significance than the original revolution of the Iranian nation.

Beginning of new era

President Hassan Rouhni, addressing a meeting of the Cultural Revolution Supreme Council on Wednesday, said November 4 marks the beginning of a new era of important political developments and political independence in Iran.

Historical and national occasions should be used to consolidate unity, he said adding such occasions do not belong to a specific faction and should not be used to further factional interests.

“November 4 marks the resistance of the Iranian nation against excessive demands”, the President said.

The Iranian president reiterated that the high school and university students have played a decisive role in the political developments and safeguarding the Islamic Revolution's achievements, specially the Sacred Defense.
