Navy to unveil homegrown destroyer in coming months

The Iranian Navy plans to launch its newest destroyer “Sahand” in the coming months, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said.

"The construction of Sahand destroyer has progressed well and we hope that it will come into operation in the coming months,” Sayyari said in a televised interview on Thursday, Tasnim News Agency reported.

Sahand is the third destroyer produced as part of the Mowj (Wave) project.

Sahand’s predecessors, Jamaran and Damavand, are currently in service and used for naval missions in international waters.

The navy commander also said that the Iranian naval forces have escorted over 3,000 commercial vessels and oil tankers from 22 countries in international waters.

Earlier in August, Sayyari announced that Iran’s new homegrown naval gear, including missile-launching warships, destroyers, as well as squadrons of vessels and submarines, will be launched until March 2017.
