Iran snatched a Greco-Roman gold at the 2016 World Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament 1 in Mongolia’s Ulaanbaatar Friday.
Amir Qassemi-Monjazi representing Iran in 130kg secured his Olympic berth after cruising into final and had an easy job in the final showdown as China’s Qiang Meng failed to show up on the mat due to injury, varzesh3.com reported.
On his quest for gold, Qassemi-Monjazi had overpowered rivals from Argentina, Hungary and Uzbekistan. The glittering medal awarded Iran the fifth ticket to Rio.
The bitter side was the 9-4 loss of Iran’s 2012 Olympic gold medalist Hamid Sourian. The 59kg wrestler was overcome by his Bulgarian opponent in the second round.
