Economy, key to strategic Russia ties: Diplomat

Iran must first have thriving economic relations with Russia if ties between the two countries are to gain a strategic status, said an Iranian deputy foreign minister.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia-Pacific Affairs Ebrahim Rahimpour, in a meeting with Deputy Speaker of Russia's Federation Council Ilyas Umakhanov in Russia, commended the political will of Iranian and Russian officials for closer interaction, Tasnim News Agency reported.

Referring to the telephone conversation between Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Russia counterpart Vladimir Putin a few days ahead of the recent OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) meeting in Vienna, Rahimpour underlined that cooperation and agreements between Tehran and Moscow would have major impacts on international developments.

The Russian lawmaker said Russia's Federation Council attaches great significance to stronger collaboration with Iran in view of the rapid international developments.

Two weeks ago, Chairwoman of the Federation Council of Russia Valentina Ivanovna Matviyenko visited Iran during which she held high-profile meetings with President Rouhani and Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani.
