Mardani wins Iran’s sole gold at World Taekwondo Grand Prix Final

Iran’s Sajjad Mardani snatched gold on the second day of the 2016 WTF World Taekwondo Grand Prix Final.

Mardani defeated Russian Vladislav Larin 4-3 in the final showdown of the men’s +80kg weight category, Tasnim News Agency reported.

In the third-place playoff match, Russia’s Roman Kuznetsov fought a very smart, dynamic bout against Nigeria’s Abdoul Razak Issoufou Alfaga. The towering Rio silver medalist looked slow and uninspired throughout the; and the Russian took bronze with a 2-1 victory.

Mardani had defeated taekwondokas from Spain (3-1), Tunisia (6-2) and Nigeria (7-6) to reach the final of the +80kg weight class.

Armin Hadi-Pour, Behnam Asbaqi, Abolfazl Yaqoubi and Masoud Hajji-Zavareh were the other Iranian taekwondokas who had taken part in the tournament.

A total of 118 athletes from 41 nations took part in the two-day tourney for medals, prize money and early ranking points ahead of the 2017 fighting season.

The meet began on Friday and wrapped up on Saturday.
