Boroujerdi, Jaafari discuss regional developments, ties

Chairman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Alaeddin Boroujerdi and Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari discussed recent developments in region and bilateral relations during a meeting in Baghdad.

Boroujerdi and Jaafari stressed the necessity for closer cooperation and consultations between Iran and Iraq with the aim of ending terrorism and restoring peace and security to the region, Tasnim News Agency reported.

The two high-ranking officials also discussed ways to promote bilateral relations between Tehran and Baghdad in various spheres in line with the interests of the people of both countries.

Boroujerdi described bilateral relations between Iran and Iraq as strategic, emphasizing the need for strengthening economic ties.

He also called an upcoming meeting between the Syrian government and the opposition side in Kazakhstan as an important step toward the political solution to the country's crisis.

Jaafari also extended his condolences over the passing away of Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Iran’s former president, who died last week in Tehran.

Boroujerdi, heading a parliamentary delegation, traveled to Iraq to attend a conference named “Baghdad Dialogue Conference and the Future of Post-ISIL Iraq”.

Iraq has been facing a growing threat of terrorism, mainly posed by Daesh terrorist group.

Daesh terrorists made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the last summer, after capturing large swathes of northern Syria.

However, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the volunteer forces have blunted the edge of Daesh offensive.

Amid tensions in Iraq, Iran is known as the first country to help the Arab country and has always voiced support for Iraq’s solidarity and prosperity.
