Iran men’s ice hockey national team conceded a 7-1 defeat to Macau in its opener in the ice hockey meet of the eighth 2017 Sapporo Asian Winter Games on Saturday in Japan.
This is the first Iranian team the history taking part in an international ice hockey tournament, varzesh3.com reported.
Mohammadreza Mahdavian scored Iran’s solitary goal to be the first Iranian whose puck finds the net in an international ice hockey match.
The defeat came as Iran was not playing at its full capacity.
Coached by Kaveh Sedqi, the Iranian squad arrived in Sapporo, the largest city on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, on Wednesday after holding a joint training session with a Malaysian team in the Southeast Asian country.
In its other Group B fixtures, Iran will take on Indonesia, Malaysia and Turkmenistan on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
The final and third-place playoff matches of the tournament, which will be played between the toppers and runners-up of Groups A and B respectively, will be held on February 26.
Group A consists of Bahrain, Philippines, Qatar, Kyrgyzstan and Athletes from Kuwait.
The Iranian ice hockey players will return to Iran on February 28.
