Athletes from 50 countries to run in Tehran Int'l Marathon

Runners from 50 countries have registered to take part in the first edition of the Tehran International Marathon to begin in the Iranian capital on April 8 hosted by the Islamic Republic of Iran Athletics Federation (IRIAF).

So far, 73, 31, 28 and 20 runners from Iran, the UK, the US and Germany have submitted their names. Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Japan are among the countries with only one participant in the event, reported.

Currently, the number of the athletes who have registered to take part in the Iranian marathon stands at 360. However, the figure is expected to exceed 1,100.

To be held under the motto of “I Run Iran”, the tournament will feature contenders in 10 kilometers, half marathon and full marathon road running competitions.

The IRIAF announced that the sports event will start from Azadi Sport Complex in western Tehran, along Karaj Special Road, past Azadi and Enghelab squares and backward.

The champion of the 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) run will  be awarded the $1,000 cash prize. The runner-up will be paid $700, while the third-finisher will earn $500.

The title winner of the half marathon event will get $1,500, while the vice champion of the 21.0975-kilometer-long (13.1094-mile-long) contest will receive $1,000. The third person on podium will collect $500.

In the marathon race with an official distance of 42.195 kilometers (26.219 miles), the victor will be awarded $3,000. The second to sixth finishers will pocket $2,500, $2,000, $1,500, $1,000 and $500 respectively.
