Bangladeshi NGOs on Monday (October 23) called on UN aid agencies to involve their local counterparts more to better address a humanitarian crisis unfolding in camps in Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar where nearly 1,000,000 Rohingya Muslim refugees have been taking shelter.

The United Nations has appealed for $434 million to provide life-saving aid to 1.2 million people for six months. A total of $344 million has been raised so far, a final UN statement said after a donors pledging conference in Geneva on Monday, presstv.com reported.

Local NGOs said localizing relief efforts would reduce costs and improve efficiency of the operations.

Myanmar considers the Rohingya to be stateless, although they trace their presence in the country back generations.
