A total of 376 hectares of Iran's traditional and semi-modern greenhouses have undergone renovation and reconstruction since mid-March 2017, said an official of the Agricultural Jihad Ministry.

The move was made to increase and improve the quantity and quality of agro products, added Gholamreza Taqavi, the director general of the office for greenhouses, medicinal plants and mushroom affairs of the Agricultural Jihad Ministry's Horticultural Affairs Division, IRNA reported.

He said, "In the year to mid-March 2018, we plan to develop 2,400 hectares under greenhouse cultivation, of which more than 900 hectares have undergone the process in Tehran, Isfahan (central Iran), Yazd (central Iran) and Kerman (southeast Iran) provinces."

Taqavi said following the 900-hectare expansion in the area under greenhouse cultivation, the sector's production capacity will witness a growth of 230,000 tons.

He added, "We plan to reconstruct and renovate 2,500 hectares of the traditional and semi-modern greenhouses by 2021. This area will be expanded to 5,000 hectares within 10 years."
