Close to 10,000 knee surgeries are conducted annually in Iran, said a member of Iranian Society of Knee Surgery, Arthroscopy and Sports Traumatology (ISKAST).
Dr. Hamidreza Yazdi told Iran Daily: “We have made a good progress in orthopedic treatments and knee surgery. Currently, we can conduct the most complicated knee surgeries. There is no need to dispatch patients abroad.”
He said arthritis is the main reason behind knee joint replacement, adding numerous factors such as genetics, lifestyle, pressure on the knees, obesity and knee injuries can lead to arthritis.
Knee abrasion is caused by aging since knee is a hinge joint which can wear away gradually, he pointed out. When the knee joint wear out, one will be affected by knee arthritis — suffering joint pain and joint deformation, he added.
The orthopedic surgeon said high-calorie diet which lead to obesity, trigger more pressure on knee joints — bringing about knee arthritis.
“We have patients aged between 30 and 35, who have been affected by arthritis in two knees due to morbid obesity.”
When knee joint suffers and its abrasion cannot be treated through medicine or surgery, it needs to be replaced, he added.
Therefore, when an orthopedic surgeon encounters knee joint abrasion, he/she may conduct knee joint replacement surgery, he noted.
He referred to rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis as other reasons behind joint abrasion.
In addition, accidents and sport injuries (ligament injuries or meniscus injuries) or chondral injuries cause joint abrasion gradually — making knee replacement surgery a must, he said.
He also said knee arthritis usually starts between ages of 45 and 50 in women and 55 and 60 in men.
The Fifth International Biennial Congress of Iranian Society of Knee Surgery, Arthroscopy and Sports Traumatology will be held at the Kish Island Convention Center during February 14-17, he said.
The four-day gathering will focus on diseases that affect the knee, shoulder, upper organ, ankle, hip joint, knee joint replacement surgery and sport medicine, he added.
Guests from Germany, the US, Austria, the UK, France, Turkey, India, South Korea, Japan and Persian Gulf littoral states are to take part in the congress, he concluded.
