Turkish FM, Zarif discuss ties, regional developments

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif held talks with Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu on bilateral issues as well as the latest regional developments in Tehran on Wednesday.

The situations in Iraq and Syria were high on the agenda during the one-day visit, a report by Tasnim News Agency said.

The Turkish official traveled to Iran on Wednesday to hold talks with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Zarif, President Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman said.

In a news conference in Ankara, spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said Turkey's military operation in Syria will be discussed during the visit, Reuters reported.

The visit will come one day after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani strongly slammed Ankara for its ongoing operation in Syria’s Afrin, which is aimed at defeating US-backed Kurdish militants in the war-torn country. Rouhani urged Turkey to immediately stop the operation.

The operation has faced criticisms by Syria, which calls it a violation of its sovereignty.

Iran and Turkey along with Russia have been acting as guarantor states for the peace process in Syria. They are also the main organizers of Astana peace talks aimed at finding a solution to the Syria crisis.
