Navy commander: IONS willing to form military alliance

Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi acknowledged that delegations attending the 6th Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) in Tehran implicitly welcomed formation of a military coalition.

He said on Tuesday Iran has proposed the formation of a military coalition between members of IONS because the security in the Indian Ocean region is a priority, IRNA reported.

Khanzadi added that most of representatives participating in the conference welcomed the proposal which will be discussed during the meeting of commanders.

Khanzadi said that he held separate meetings with naval delegations from Turkey, Bangladesh, Indonesia, China, India, South Africa, Russia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Japan.

The commander added that representatives of the member states had negotiations on exchanging students at different levels. He said the participants also discussed dispatching flotilla to each other’s countries as well as holding naval maneuvers in different levels.

The rear admiral also announced that a joint naval maneuver of relief and rescue between Iran and Oman naval forces is scheduled to be held on May 7-8.
