Europe’s full commitment to fulfilling its pledges under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is Tehran’s main condition for staying in the Iran nuclear deal, said a senior Iranian MP.
Speaking to Iran Daily, Hossein-Ali Shahriari stressed that Europe is required to abide by the terms of the JCPOA, signed between Tehran and P5+1 in July 2015, and honor the legitimate requests of the people of Iran.
Commenting on the approach and policy adopted by European signatories to the deal following the US withdrawal from the JCPOA, he said although Europeans refrained from following the US government’s move, it is not yet clear what their reaction to the deal will be in the future.
The Iranian lawmaker said Europeans will certainly put forward a number of demands in talks with Iran, stressing that Iranian officials are required to enter into and conduct negotiations with Europe on the basis of the two sides’ commitments under the JCPOA, firmly stand by their country’s stances toward the deal and refrain from granting them any new concessions.
He added Iran has thus far completely fulfilled its commitments under the deal, saying that now the rest of the parties to the JCPOA are required to prove their sincerity to Iran within the framework of implementing the agreement.
Shahriari noted that as stipulated in the JCPOA, in case any of the parties fails to abide by the terms of the deal, the other side can withdraw from it.
He said that despite the US’s reneging on its pledge and withdrawing from the JCPOA, Iran has not yet exited the deal and is still fully committed to its implementation, which began on January 16, 2016.
Since the JCPOA was signed, the MP said, the US began to demonstrate its non-commitment to the deal.
“By imposing new sanctions against Iran at that time, the US government showed that, in practice, it is not committed to its promises under the deal. Irrespective of the outcome of our negotiations with the Europeans, we should stand on our own feet and overcome the problems our country is beset with, by creating unity.”
The Iranian lawmaker said the correct and complete implementation of the Resistance Economy – a set of guidelines established by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei – policies and projects will help minimize the country’s vulnerability to the pressure the US is attempting to exert on it.
Regretting that the reinstatement of the nuclear sanctions and the unilateral imposition of new ones by the US may create problems for Iran’s more vulnerable social strata, he noted that to overcome such difficulties the country’s officials and people are required to double their efforts.
“Economic pressures on the [Iranian] people will become more tolerable in case the officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran do their best to reduce the wealth gap between themselves and the middle class of the society and transparently combat economic corruption in the country.”
