Leader: US seeking to divide Iranians

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said Saturday the US is exerting economic pressure on Iran in a bid to drive a wedge between the nation and the Islamic Republic, but such efforts will be futile.

"The enemy's plan is to separate the people from the establishment, and this scheme reflects their stupidity because they do not know that the Islamic Republic is nothing but the Iranian nation and these two cannot be separated," Ayatollah Khamenei  said.

Iran’s rial currency has lost up to 40 percent of its value since last month, when US President Donald Trump pulled out of the 2015 nuclear accord and said he would reimpose sanctions and try to curb Iranian oil exports.

Speaking to graduating Islamic Revolution Guards Corps officers, the Leader said the United States and its regional “reactionary” allies are trying to destabilize the government in Tehran.

"If America was able to act against Iran, it would not need to form coalitions with notorious and reactionary states in the region and ask their help in fomenting unrest and instability (in Iran)," he said in remarks carried by national TV.

The Leader slammed the US animosity toward the Iranian nation and said: “Hostility of the US increases every day, and the nation’s hatred toward the US increases every day.

"The purpose of the current economic pressure is to make people fed up, but with divine power, we will increase our bond with the people day by day, and by preserving our coherence, we will strengthen the faithful and proactive youth."
