Iran booked its berth in the last eight of the 2018 FIBA U18 Asian Championship in Thailand with a perfect run at the group stage.

Having beaten Indonesia (80-50) and Kazakhstan (86-54) in its first two games in Group A, Iran overcame Japan 71-64 on Tuesday to secure a place in the quarterfinals as the group winner.

Behshad Arabzadeh made the biggest contribution to Iran’s victory with a team-high 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Eshaq Hatamifar also played an influential role with 13 points and four rebounds while Ehsan Dalirzahan had 10 points, five rebounds and two assists to his name.

Keijiro Mitani led the scoring charts for Japan, chipping in seven points plus three rebounds and four assists.

An automatic qualification for the quarterfinals as the group winner means Iran will face the winner of the New Zealand-India fixture in the last eight on August 9.

Having started on August 5, the 25th edition of the competition will finish in the Thai city of Nonthaburi on August 11.

The top four teams will represent Asia in the 2019 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup.
