The closing ceremony of the 2018 Asian Games was held at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Sunday, officially bringing the curtain down on the 18th edition of the multi-sport event.

As expected, China dominated the competitions with 289 medals – including 132 golds – and topped the overall medals table.

Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and Uzbekistan took the second to fifth spots, respectively.

Having finished fifth in Incheon 2014, Iran dropped one place to sixth with a total of 62 medals – comprising 20 golds, 20 silvers and 22 bronze medals.

With five gold medals – three in freestyle and two in Greco-Roman competitions – wrestling led the line for Iran.

The Iranian wrestlers also topped the overall medals chart for the country with eight along with the country’s karatekas who won two golds, three silvers and three bronzes.

Of the 20 gold winners, two came up with new records.

Iranian 94kg weightlifter Sohrab Moradi raised the 189kg weight above his head in his gold-winning campaign to set a new world record in the snatch competitions, while distance runner Hossein Kayhani bettered the Games record when finishing first in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, clocking 8:22.79 minutes.

Despite failing to win a gold or silver, table tennis player Noshad Alamian and Iran’s men’s water polo team grabbed two precious bronze medals to end the country’s long-time wait for a medal in the Games.

Alamian’s bronze was Iran’s first table tennis singles’ medal in the Games since Houshang Bozorgzadeh had last won a bronze in 1966 in Bangkok, Thailand, while the victory over China in the third-place playoff ended Iran’s 44-year medal drought in the water polo competitions.
