Pakistan’s minister: Zarif visit shows importance of ties

Pakistan Minister for Human Rights, Shireen Mazari described a recent visit by the Iranian foreign minister to Pakistan as a positive move which indicates that Islamabad regards its ties with Iran as a very important part of its foreign policy.

In an interview with IRNA, she said Iran is a very important ally and neighbor of Pakistan and our ties are improving in all areas including defense sector.

She added that during Mohammad Javad Zarif’s visit, many other significant issues were discussed.

“It is very encouraging that the Iranian foreign minister was the first foreign dignitary who came to meet the new leadership in Islamabad, that itself also shows the significance Pakistan and Iran both place on their bilateral relations,” she noted.

The Pakistani minister said that the visit came at a very crucial time just before a visit by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who arrived in Pakistan on Wednesday.

Zarif paid arrived in Pakistan on August 30 for a two-day visit. He held several meetings with Pakistani officials, including newly elected Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Mazari also hailed increasing military cooperation between the two neighbors.

She said that for the first time in four decades, the chief of staff of Iranian Armed Forces paid a visit to Pakistan, describing it as a very good sign that shows both countries’ military and state officials want to further improve relations.

Touching upon the Iran nuclear agreement with world powers, Mazari said “We support Iran’s principled position on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. We think that the JCPOA has the support of all the international community and therefore nobody should try to unilaterally scrap this agreement.”
