Long knives are out for Trump: Analyst

The long knives are out for US President Donald Trump and a palace coup is now being discussed openly, says Myles Hoenig, an American political analyst and activist.

Hoenig, a former Green Party candidate for Congress, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Friday after US Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts called on senior administration officials to oust Trump.

“According to Bob Woodward’s latest book “Fear” members of the Trump team early in his administration considered their president to be unfit to perform his duties. It may not have gone far in the process of invoking the 25th amendment at that time but the very thought of it is quite chilling,” Hoenig said.

“Critics and allies alike have long doubted his competence. If it was just a matter of style, from his tweets to his incendiary remarks about opponents it would be something we would just have to live with. After all, he has provided red meat to his base and support for politicians who share his racism, Islamaphoia, misogyny and utter crudeness. He is an asset to many who seek power or wish to turn the clock back decades, if not centuries,” he stated.

“Today it’s a battle of wills and political muscle. The long knives are out and a palace coup is now being discussed openly. Now that it’s an election year for the mid-terms and campaign season for 2020, Democrats have decided that challenging President Trump is safe, if not a winner, and great public relations videos for their upcoming campaigns. We have Sen. Warren now calling for the invocation of the 25th amendment without understanding, or at least acknowledging, the consequences,” he noted.

“A successful removal of Trump gives us Mike Pence. Unless he’s outed as the anonymous op-ed writer and unable to withstand the wrath of the Trump believers, he would succeed Trump, bringing a gravitas to the White House and with him his policies and a much quicker roll back of all civil, environmental, labor and human rights laws that have been fought for decades,” the analyst said.

“As down as Trump seems to be now, we should not discount his ability to fight back and win. In addition to many in the media that has been out to derail him from the beginning, notably CNN and MSNBC, he now has physical proof in the op-ed that there are real people out to get him. Even paranoids can have real enemies,” he said.

“People say that we’re in a constitutional crisis right now but that would only apply if the constitutional process is being abrogated. Right now it’s all words and no action. If Warren is successful then there would be no such crisis, unless it is resisted by Trump and his minions,” he concluded.

A Wednesday Op-Ed in The New York Times purportedly written by an anonymous official, described how the Trump administration had been stopping the chief executive from making detrimental mistakes due to his poor morals and unruly behavior.

"If senior administration officials think the president of the United States is not able to do his job, then they should invoke the 25th Amendment," Warren, who is a potential 2020 presidential candidate, told media on Thursday.

Section 4 of the 25th Amendment of the Constitution allows the vice president and cabinet officials to write to Congress if they believe the president is not capable of fulfilling his duties. In that event, the vice president would assume presidential duties.
