Two hundred and seventy genetic counseling centers are active across the country, said deputy head of the Office for Preventing Disabilities, affiliated to the State Welfare Organization.
Minou Rafiei further said that today, due to the growth in public awareness, genetic teams have been stationed in premarital counseling centers to render services to the people, Mehr News Agency wrote.
She added that based on Article 75 of Sixth Five-Year Economic Development Plan, couples should go through compulsory premarital genetic screening.
Physicians and genetic counselors recommend tests if needed, she said. In cases that the couples cannot afford the tests, they will get assistance, she pointed out.
Rafiei continued that there are 20,000 genetic diseases, but all of them do not lead to disabilities.
She added that 50 percent of mental retardations, 50 percent of hearing losses and 50 percent of eye defects are attributed to genetics.
Rafiei announced that the Seventh Genetics Seminar and its Role on Preventing Disabilities will be held at Abu Reyhan Hall of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran during November 14-15, 2018.
