Iran’s medal tally hits 49 at Asian Para Games

Iranian athletes kept up the momentum on the third day of the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, taking the country’s tally to 49 medals – including 17 golds.

On Tuesday, Iranians collected a total of eight gold medals, seven silvers and nine bronzes.

In para powerlifting competitions, Iran’s Rouhollah Rostami – a 2012 Paralympics silver medalist – set a new world record in the men’s 72kg category – overcoming 229kg – to claim the gold medal.

Iranian swimmer Shahin Izadyar took his personal tally to three golds after he clocked      02:27.07 in the final race of the men's 200m individual medley SM10.

In para shooting, Iranians stole the show at the P2 women's 10m air pistol SH1 contests as Sareh Javanmardi – collecting her second gold of the Games – and Samira Eram claimed the first two spots respectively.

The best result of the day for Iranians came in the para athletics competitions where they scooped 18 medals – including five golds.

Mahdi Olad (men's shot put F11), Mohammadreza Ahmadi (men's shot put F33), Farzad Sepahvand (men's discus throw F43/44, F62/64), Hossein Khorsand-Amiri (men's discus throw F51/52/53) and Batoul Jahangiri (women's shot put F33) finished their campaign on a high note by winning the gold in their categories.

Iran currently sits fifth in the overall table, going neck and neck with Japan – which stands fourth with 85 medals (17 golds).

China, South Korea and Uzbekistan sit first to third respectively.

Having started on October 6, the quadranial multi-sport event will finish on October 13.
