Collecting 136 medals, Iran finished in third place at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

A heroic performance by Iran against Japan in the final of the men’s wheelchair basketball competitions brought the curtain down on a glittering campaign for Iranian athletes in the Games.

Having lost the first quarter by nine points (21-12), Iranians bounced back to win a nail-biting final 68-66 and clinch the country’s 51st gold in the competitions.

Iran trailed South Korea in the overall standings by only two gold medals as the South Koreans finished runner up with 145 medals.

China dominating the event with 319 medals, including 172 golds, was not a big surprise.

Para swimming sensation Shahin Izadyar stole the headlines in Jakarta as he singlehandedly added six gold medals and one silver to Iran’s tally.

Sareh Javanmardi was also among the most prolific athletes in the Iranian squad with one gold in the P4 mixed 50m free pistol SH1 and another in the P2 10m air pistol SH1 in the women’s para shooting contests.

Moreover, other Iranian para athletics contestants bagged 81 medals (26 golds) to make significant contributions to the country’s success.

Compared to Incheon 2014 – where Iran finished fourth behind Japan – Iranians scooped 14 more golds to outstrip the Japanese – who finished fourth with 45 golds.

The third edition of the event came to an end on Saturday with the closing ceremony held at the GBK Stadium in the Indonesian capital.
