Zakharova told IRNA that cooperation with Iran is of great importance for Russia.
“Countries that unilaterally impose sanctions are those that claim to support human rights, economic development and democracy, but in practice they are far from their ideals,” she said.
Zakharova described the US anti-Iran sanctions as blatant violation of law, standards and principles of international relations, saying that Russia’s stance on the issue is clear to everybody.
Russia sees decisions made by the United Nations Security Council as a basis for adopting policies, she said.
Zakharova said the sanctions are not rational, and destabilize the world. She stressed that Russia would not comply with the sanctions.
US President Donald Trump withdrew Washington in May from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and reimposed unilateral sanctions against Tehran.
Other signatories to the JCPOA have slammed Washington's decision to abandon the agreement, which has also been endorsed by a UN Security Council resolution, saying they will work to keep the accord alive.
Under the nuclear deal reached between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries – the United States, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia – Iran agreed to put limits on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related sanctions.
